There May Be One Reason Xbox Is Much Better For Fallout 4's Next-Gen Update

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Summary PlayStation Plus players are being charged for Fallout 4's next-gen upgrade, unlike Xbox Game Pass subscribers receiving it for free.

Fallout 4 owners who got the game through PlayStation Plus in the past are not granted free access to the next-gen version.

Some players who own Fallout 4 are being asked to pay for the upgrade despite already having purchased the game.

Fallout 4's long-awaited next-gen upgrade has finally been released, but PlayStation owners seem to be getting a worse deal than Xbox. To coincide with the release of the acclaimed Fallout TV show on Amazon Prime, Bethesda announced that this would be a free update for PS4 and Xbox One owners, and would be launching alongside native digital applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on the same day with next-gen enhancements such as new Performance and Quality mode settings available across all platforms, as well as stability improvements and fixes.

Unfortunately, upon its release, some PlayStation owners complained that the update isn't showing up as free for them. videotechuk_ took to X to express their frustration, asking why the new version isn't being granted.

Those Who Got Fallout 4 On PlayStation Plus Aren't Getting The Free Next-Gen Upgrade

But Those Playing The Game On Xbox Game Pass Are

It seems like the upgrade isn't free for those who got Fallout 4 when it was a free monthly title as part of PlayStation Plus years ago, rather than purchasing it. videotechuk_ did point out that those who are playing Fallout 4 on Xbox Game Pass are still getting the update for free, although this could be due to Microsoft's ownership of Bethesda ensuring the next-gen version was added to Game Pass at launch.

The inclusion of the title on PlayStation Plus is causing issues for those who already owned the title but downloaded the PS+ version as well, such as Korbendallas072, who is also being asked to pay for the upgrade on PlayStation. Korbendallas072 pointed out that the paid version and the PS Plus version are still showing the PS4 version and both of their versions are appearing on the store alongside the standalone paid PS5 version. Whereas those who only have the game via PS Plus are being told the upgrade simply isn't free for them, currently, Bethesda Support has yet to respond on what to do in a situation like Korbendallas072's.

It's a shame PlayStation Plus players are essentially being penalized for getting Fallout 4 through their subscription while Xbox Game Pass subscribers get the upgrade for free. This has been the case with other titles in the past, however, as those who had acquired Final Fantasy 7 Remake through PlayStation Plus' monthly titles deal had to pay to upgrade to the PS5's Intergrade edition, although that situation was ultimately a whole lot more complicated. Hopefully, for those who did also own Fallout 4, this will be resolved soon, and they'll be able to play the enhanced version for free.
