Further expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Knuckles season 1 premiered on Paramount+ in 2024, but will the spinoff series get a second season? Based on the eponymous character who appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the series catches up with the echidna as he tries to find a new life for himself on Earth where he is no longer living a warrior's existence. Set in the immediate aftermath of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles is caught in an existential crisis and far from home, so he helps the human Wade Whipple become a warrior in his own right.

As an interim between the blockbuster Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Knuckles was the perfect way to flesh out the character without dedicating too much screen time in the climactic cinematic installments. Though the reviews haven't all been positive, the show accomplished its goal of fleshing out Knuckles and it is one of the better examples of a Sonic movie or TV show in the massive multimedia franchise. However, its somewhat conclusive ending suggests a second season isn't guaranteed, even if the buddy dynamic between Knuckles and Wade Whipple would make for must-see TV.

Knuckles is the type of show that could easily be brought back for another season, even if the ending was a satisfying enough conclusion.

With the show being billed as a miniseries, Paramount+ hasn't announced a second season of Knuckles yet. That doesn't necessarily mean a sophomore outing won't come eventually, and modern TV history is filled with examples of so-called miniseries that are renewed for one or maybe even several additional seasons. Knuckles is the type of show that could easily be brought back for another season, even if the ending was a satisfying enough conclusion.

Knuckles season 1 debuted all 6 episodes on April 26, 2024.

The determining factor for a Knuckles season 2 will ultimately be the viewership numbers, and they will need to be quite high to justify more episodes. Producer Toby Ascher said as much when he teased Knuckles season 2 before the release of season 1, and he hinged the future on the success or failure of the premiere episodes. As for the conclusiveness of season 1, Ascher said "I don’t think there’s any closed doors on future television, future seasons of Knuckles, so everything is wide open." That means other spinoffs are also possible if Knuckles does well.

The satisfying ending of Knuckles season 1 not only wrapped up the story but also limited the number of characters who could return in season 2. None of the villains would logically return, which means only Knuckles and his close allies would make up the ensemble of the sophomore season until new names and characters were announced. With that in mind, the new lovable duo of Idris Elba as Knuckles and Adam Pally as Wade Whipple would need to be reunited in the second season, since their chemistry carried the entire series.

What Battles Will Wade & Knuckles Fight Next?

The most likely scenario for the plot of Knuckles season 2 would involve the fallout from whatever happens in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The ending of Knuckles season 1 saw both the titular character and his newfound best friend Wade conquer the things that were holding them back, and they both discovered what it truly meant to be a warrior. With "The Buyer" vanquished, and Wade finally letting go of his deadbeat dad for good, the sky is the limit for the budding action duo. Season 2 will need to concoct some entirely new adventure for them because season 1 wrapped everything up nicely.

The most likely scenario for the plot of Knuckles season 2 would involve the fallout from whatever happens in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Since season 1 took place in the aftermath of Sonic 2, and Dr. Robotnik was not in Knuckles, it stands to reason that the sophomore season will have more to work with once the next big screen adventure is wrapped up. On the other hand, instead of Knuckles season 2, another spinoff could be produced that fleshes out some other Sonic character.
