Warning: Spoilers for Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023) #12 ahead!

Batman and Robin have always been the Dynamic Duo – but that duo has changed over the years, with partner after partner taking up the mantle of Robin from their predecessor. Now, more than a decade since the last person to take on the role debuted, DC Comics has officially confirmed Maps Mizoguchi as the sixth Robin.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023) #12 opens with the story "Batman: Mother's Day, Part 3" (from the team of Karl Kerschl, MSassyK, and Steve Wands), in which Maps Mizoguchi saves Batman from the influence of a vampiric creature that has been spreading a plague of Man-Bats across Gotham. In turn, Batman has Alfred bring her to the Batcave and gears her up for her first official mission as Robin.

After the threat has been dealt with, Batman admits to himself that while their team-up was initially born of necessity, he still thinks of Maps as Robin and will continue to gauge her skills in the future.

The Legacy of Robin is One of Comics' Strongest

Batman’s sidekick “Robin” is one of DC's most famous figures – but many different individuals have held the role over the years. The first and most famous is Dick Grayson, an orphaned circus acrobat who became Robin all the way back in Detective Comics (1937) #38; Dick would eventually become the superhero, Nightwing. The next Robin, Jason Todd, was taken in by Batman after being caught stealing the tires off the Batmobile in Batman (1940) #408. Though Jason’s career as Robin infamously ended with his murder at the hands of the Joker, he was later resurrected as the anti-hero, Red Hood.

Detective Comics (1937) #38 is by the team of Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson; Batman (1940) #408 is by Max Collins, Chris Warner, Mike DeCarlo, and Todd Klein.

Tim Drake became the third Robin after deducing Batman's identity in Batman (1940) #441, and has continued to operate as Robin (sometimes "Red Robin") through the modern day. The fourth Robin, Stephanie Brown, is arguably the least well known: her tenure as Robin lasted only three issues (Robin (1993) #126-128) before she was fired for disobeying orders in the field. Stephanie would later go on to join the trio of Batgirls alongside Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain. Lastly, Damian Wayne (Batman's son with Talia al'Ghul) took on the role of Robin in Batman (1940) #657, and still operates as Batman's partner.

Batman (1940) #441 is by Marv Wolfman, Jim Aparo, Mike DeCarlo, Adrienne Roy, and John Costanza; #657 is by Grant Morrison, Andy Kubert, Jesse Delperdang, Dave Stewart, and Nick J. Napolitano. Robin (1993) issues #126-128 are by Bill Willingham, Damion Scott, Robert Campanella, Guy Major, and Phil Balsman.

Who Is Maps Mizoguchi?

Now Mia 'Maps' Mizoguchi is the latest person to take on this legendary role. First appearing in Gotham Academy (2014) #1, Maps is a student at the titular academy. The series' breakout star, Maps' sleuthing skills are matched only by her irrepressible energy, her cheerful personality, and her dedication to leaving no mystery unsolved. She, alongside her brother Kyle and her friends Olive Silverlocke, Pomeline Fritch, and Colton Rivera, spend much of the series exploring the mysteries of their strange school.

Maps' tenure at Gotham Academy has always been closely associated with the role of Robin. Notably, she teams up with and befriends Damian Wayne in Gotham Academy #7; his subsequent gift to Maps of a batarang later leads Tim Drake to believe that Maps is a sanctioned member of the then-active "We Are Robin" youth vigilante movement in issue #11. The final issue (#12) of Gotham Academy: Second Semester (2016) even has Maps saving Olive's life while wearing an official Robin mask, leading Olive to acknowledge that Maps is "really good at...being a hero. Saving people."

Maps' Adventures With Batman

Close

Maps first appeared as Robin alongside Batman in the Batman: Black & White (2020) #4 story "Davenport House"; while not canonical, it marks the first in-story appearance of the Robin outfit Maps would wear in subsequent adventures. Maps dons a (homemade) Robin outfit again in Batman (2016) #119-121, "They Make Great Pets," when attempting to solve the disappearance of her classmate, Lindsay Okamura. While Batman attempts to put an end to Maps' unsanctioned investigation and must later rescue her from being eaten by a monster, this marks the first time Batman calls Maps "Robin" in an attempt to comfort her.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023) #10-12, "Mother's Day," marks Maps' first official mission as Robin, with Batman enlisting her aid to track down her missing Man-Bat friend, Tristan Grey. Batman continues to think of Maps as "Robin" throughout these issues, although he refuses to say so aloud; it is only after Maps frees Batman from the control of a vampiric monster (a symbolic reversal of their previous adventure) that Batman relents. Having Alfred bring her to the Batcave, Batman officially enlists Maps to take the monster down, making her DC's sixth Robin.

"Davenport House" is by Karl Kerschl and Steve Wands. "They Make Great Pets" is by Karl Kerschl, John Rauch, and Dave McCraig. "Mother's Day" is by Karl Kerschl, Michele Assarasakorn, Steve Wands, and Pat Brosseau.

Is Maps Mizoguchi A Hidden Robin?

While readers have waited nearly a decade to see Maps realize her ambition of Robin-hood, her place in the DC timeline is muddy. Alfred is the one to first take her to the Batcave, placing her time as Robin before Alfred's death in Batman (2016) #77 and concurrent with Tim and Damian's time as Robin. However, Maps seems unfamiliar with the Bat-Family during Batgirls (2022) #11, which takes place after Alfred has died; she acts awestruck when Cassandra Cain informs her she just helped with "Batman stuff," and behaves as though she has never met Batman in person.

While this could be designated as an editorial oversight, there is a legitimate reason to cite time travel as an explanation. An older Maps appears in Birds of Prey (2023) #1 in a new outfit and new identity as "Meridian," a time-traveling superhero. Since Maps' access to time travel has not yet been established as of the writing of this article, it is possible that any discrepancies with young Maps and her history with the Bat-Family could be explained by her younger or future self messing around with temporal shenanigans.

Batman (2016) #77 is by Tom King, Mikel Janín, Tony S. Daniel, Norm Rapmund, Tomeu Morey, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. Batgirls (2022) #11 is by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Neil Googe, Scott Godlewski, Wayne Faucher, Rico Renzi, and Becca Carey. Birds of Prey (2023) #1 is by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles.

Batman's New Robin is a Refreshing Take on the Role

Maps' enthusiasm and infectious joie de vivre is a refreshing take on the role of Robin, particularly after the role has been dominated by the overly serious and brooding Damian Wayne. Furthermore, she brings her own specialty to the role: just like Jason Todd is an impeccable brawler and Tim Drake excels at detective work, Maps' love of lore means she shines at dealing with the supernatural, with all of her adventures alongside Batman so far involving mythological or paranormal entities like ghosts, Japanese kappas, or the Slovenian varcolac.

From her adventures at Gotham Academy to her finally donning the red-and-yellow costume, it has been a joy to watch Maps' path to becoming Robin. While there is still much to learn about Maps' adventures with Batman before she becomes Meridian in the future, Maps Mizoguchi is a stellar addition to the Bat-Family as DC's sixth official Robin.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2023) #12 is available now from DC Comics.
