Helldivers 2 Promises Its Looking Into One Of The Most Annoying Features

Summary Climbing in Helldivers 2 can be frustrating due to the finicky auto-climb mechanic, leading to unintentional deaths in-game.

Arrowhead Studios is planning to adjust the system to be more consistent with player preferences, although no specific solution has been finalized yet.

Despite technical issues, Helldivers 2 remains a standout game in 2024, with excellent gameplay and a constantly evolving meta-narrative.

Helldivers 2 is an incredible game, there's no doubt about that, but one aspect that developer Arrowhead Studios has promised to re-evaluate is the implementation of the "auto-climb" mechanic that has frustrated many since launch. To help facilitate more tactical gameplay without sacrificing too much in the way of speed, Helldivers 2 incorporates a system that allows players to automatically vault onto or over an obstacle that gets in their way while sprinting. While it works most of the time, when it decides to grow a mind of its own the consequences can be extremely annoying.

Per GamesRadar+, Arrowhead Studios' Community Manager Twinbeard confirmed that the team is looking to adjust the auto-climb system to be slightly more consistent with what players want to get out of it. They confirm that the developer is evaluating "several options" but has yet to settle on a solution that they feel best suits the game. When the tweaks will be implemented remains unknown but given Arrowhead's generally speed production of patches and updates, it seems like a safe bet to say that the community can expect the changes to drop in the near future.

Helldivers Auto-Climb Is Very Finicky

Climbing Is Fun, But Only When You Want To Climb

While it is a fairly decent mechanic in many other third-person shooters, Helldivers 2's implementation of the auto-climb has earned a reputation amongst players for causing more trouble than it is worth. The issue is that the animation for vaulting or clambering onto a surface can't be canceled, even if the movement that initiated it was unintentional. This leads to many Helldivers unwillingly climbing out of cover and subsequently dying to a legion of Automatons or Terminids when they simply wanted to readjust their position in safety.

How Arrowhead plans on fixing the system remains unknown but simply adding in the ability to cancel out the animation before exposing oneself to enemy fire would go a long way to eliminate frustration. The inclusion of a button dedicated solely to vaulting over obstacles may not be possible given the amount of inputs already required for the game. Alternatively, having the Dolphin Dive button contextually change to a vault option when close to a surface that can be scaled may also be a way of placing some control back into players' hands.

Beyond this gripe, Helldivers 2 continues to be a standout game in 2024 thanks to its excellent gameplay, intelligent progression system, and an ingenious meta-narrative that's constantly evolving. Arrowhead Studios has confirmed that the title's massive success has forced it to rework its long-term roadmap, suggesting that the developer has been able to scale up some of its planned updates, Whatever may happen in the future, as long as auto-climb isn't so insistent, players should be happy for many months to come.
