The surprising match up between Doc Ock and Knull is hinted at in 2022's Devil's Reign: Superior Four #2 by Zac Thompson and Davide Tinto. In this story, Doctor Octopus is traveling the multiverse in order to absorb the intelligence and abilities of his multiversal counterparts. This culminates in him coming face to face with the Supreme Octopus, a version of Doc Ock who becomes the Sorcerer Supreme.

The Supreme Octopus tries to impress Otto by listing his achievements, which includes defeating Dormammu and Shuma-Gorath, two demons who are massively powerful in the Marvel Universe. But by far the most impressive statement that the Supreme Octopus makes is saying that he "burned Knull to ash."

Doc Ock has always been dangerous, but he's typically a more street-level villain. He's rarely been the type of universal threat that calls for a massive coalition of Avengers to defeat. However, the Supreme Octopus is apparently more than capable of defeating even Knull. There are tons of god-like beings in the Marvel Universe, and Knull is one of the most dangerous. Knull is the god of Marvel's symbiotes, the literal personification of darkness in the Marvel Universe. It took the Avengers, Thor, Sentry, and Venom gaining the power of the Enigma Force in order to defeat him. Yet the Supreme Octopus apparently accomplished this with just a wave of his hand.

Marvel's multiverse has several universes where the Earth ends due to some apocalyptic event. But this also means that there are plenty of battles that readers never get to see. In these universes, unexpected characters team up and fight villains that they never would usually have. Doctor Octopus gaining the powers of the Sorcerer Supreme and using it to obliterate Knull is definitely a battle readers would love to see. There are tons of universes where amazing fights like this could have happened, but readers simply haven't gotten to see them.
