Chronicles Of Narnia Movie Update Makes The Perfect Release Date Possible For Greta Gerwig's Reboot
Summary Greta Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia movie is expected to start production in August 2024.
This update could potentially allow the movie to have the perfect release date of Christmas 2025.
Both Netflix releases and fantasy movies tend to perform well during the Christmas season.
The latest production update for Netflix's The Chronicles of Narnia will allow the movie to have the perfect release date. The upcoming Greta Gerwig project will be the latest live-action adaptation of the classic series of children's novels of the same name by C.S. Lewis, which were originally published between 1950 and 1956. The novels were previously adapted to the big screen as 2005's The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, 2008's Prince Caspian, and 2010's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
While it is still unknown which of the novels will be adapted in Greta Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia movie, which will be split into at least two features, a production update has revealed when the project will kick off production. Although this has not been officially finalized, the plan is for production to commence in August 2024. If this estimated date ends up becoming a reality, this means that the roughly seven-month principal photography period will likely wrap sometime in March 2025.
Chronicles Of Narnia Post-Production Could Be Finished By December
Close
Although this would require a tight post-production schedule for the first of the new adaptations of the Chronicles of Narnia books, the Greta Gerwig movie could potentially be ready to premiere with a perfect Christmas 2025 release date. This could benefit the movie hugely, as many of Netflix's biggest hits have premiered during the Christmas season, when many families are gathered and looking for titles to stream together. Below, see the premiere dates of the Top 10 highest-performing English-language Netflix original movies of all time:
Title Premiere Date Red Notice November 12, 2021 Don't Look Up December 24, 2021 The Adam Project March 11, 2022 Bird Box December 21, 2018 Leave the World Behind December 8, 2023 The Gray Man July 22, 2022 We Can Be Heroes December 25, 2020 The Mother May 12, 2023 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery December 23, 2022 Extraction April 24, 2020
Exactly half of Netflix's top 10 list was released in December, as have other big titles including Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire. In addition to Netflix movies in general doing well during that period, there is also a history of fantasy movies performing well in theaters during the Christmas season. Previous blockbuster fantasy releases during the Christmas season include all three movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the entire Star Wars sequel trilogy, and even the previous Narnia installments The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Why Christmas Is Perfect For The Chronicles Of Narnia
Precedent Shows The Benefits Of A Christmas Release For The Greta Gerwig Movie
Because of its narrative content, The Chronicles of Narnia would be particularly served by its release being tied to the Christmas season. Should the movie adapt The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which takes place in a snowy version of the fantasy land, it would tie in well with the wintry iconography of Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere. The underlying biblical allegory of the original Lewis books would also allow the movies to connect with religious viewers looking for seasonal streaming options.
