Dead Boy Detectives: Night Nurse's Powers & Abilities Explained

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Dead Boy Detectives season 1.

Summary Night Nurse in Dead Boy Detectives is an antagonistic, rule-following, powerful being from the Afterlife's Lost & Found Department.

Night Nurse's abilities include telekinesis and memory manipulation, along with apparent immortality.

Night Nurse's immense powers speak to the importance of the Lost & Found Department within the Afterlife system.

Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives series, part of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman universe, stars Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse, an “eternal trans-dimensional being,” as described by the character herself. Connell previously played another version of Night Nurse in a 2021 episode of Doom Patrol. Of the Dead Boy Detectives cast and characters, the Night Nurse is portrayed as strictly driven by simply following the rules.

The Night Nurse is one of the antagonists in the series and runs the Afterlife’s Lost & Found Department. The Lost & Found is charged with ensuring the ghosts of dead children who have not yet passed on are discovered, processed, and sent to their proper resting places. As Dead Boy Detectives Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri) have been dodging Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) for decades, helping other spirits and investigating crimes involving the supernatural, they eventually fall on the Night Nurse’s radar.

Night Nurse's Powers & Abilities In Dead Boy Detectives

There's more to Night Nurse than meets the eye

Close

The Night Nurse exhibits a variety of abilities strongly rivaling Edwin and Charles' powers in Dead Boy Detectives. In episode 4, “The Case of the Lighthouse Leapers,” after finally receiving approval to travel to Earth searching for Edwin and Charles, Night Nurse locates where the ghosts have set up shop above the Tongue & Tail butcher. The Night Nurse seeks the psychic medium Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson), the new Dead Boy Detective Agency member renting an apartment from Jenny Green (Briana Cuoco).

After failing to convince Jenny to give up Crystal’s location, Night Nurse uses telekinetic powers to choke her. Once she has forced Jenny to reveal where Crystal is, the Night Nurse removes Jenny’s memory. Later, she showcases her ability to make people relive past traumatic events. The Night Nurse reveals how Charles died by mentally dragging him into a body of water as he was succumbing to hypothermia and internal bleeding after being attacked by his “friends.” This is followed by other negative memories — including his father’s abuse — to question why he would want to remain on Earth.

Charles, furious at the Night Nurse for poking at old wounds, knocks her off of a cliff and into the mouth of a giant anglerfish named Angie. In episode 6, “The Case of the Creeping Forest,” Night Nurse's immortality is confirmed as she not only survives being swallowed by the fish but tells the man in Angie’s stomach that she can “live for eons.” In episode 7, “The Case of the Very Long Stairway,” the Night Nurse is able to open a doorway to Hell for Charles when a demonic monster snatches Edwin and takes him away.

Just How Powerful Is The Lost & Found Department (If Night Nurse Is Middle Management)

Night Nurse is a surprisingly powerful being for her role

Ironically, even with her immense and varied powers, Night Nurse claims to be a mere piece of a larger system at work. She runs the Lost & Found Department with a severe hand, keeping her underlings walking on eggshells. Night Nurse also takes pleasure in reminding them about the importance of rules, procedures, and impeccable paperwork. However, despite being in charge of the Lost & Found Department, she still has a superior to answer to and butts heads with the organization’s notary, who happens to be more strict about guidelines than even she is.

Despite her supposed middle management role, Night Nurse's extreme powers point to the Lost & Found Department's significance as a key function of the Afterlife. It's shown in the season finale when the Night Nurse is convinced she finally has the upper hand on Edwin and Charles and brings along her superior to ensure their passing on. The Night Nurse’s superior is instead impressed by the work accomplished by the Dead Boy Detectives, as their efforts in helping ghosts move on are important and in line with the role of the Lost & Found.

Is Night Nurse In The Dead Boy Detectives Comics?

The Night Nurse in DC Comics led a separate life

Similar to Charles and Edwin of the Dead Boy Detectives, the Night Nurse was introduced in a comic book published by DC Comics. The Dead Boy Detectives first appeared in Gaiman’s The Sandman #25 in 1991. Meanwhile, the Night Nurse’s origins can be traced back to 2013's The Phantom Stranger (Volume 4) #8. Created by Dan DiDio, J.M. DeMatteis, and Philip Tan, the demonic character’s real name in the comics is Asa, also known as the Nightmare Nurse. The Nightmare Nurse has been associated with the Suicide Squad during her comic run, as well as Justice League Dark.

While the Nightmare Nurse and the Dead Boy Detectives have made memorable appearances throughout the DC universe, the characters haven’t been written in any comic books together as of yet. The Dead Boy Detectives have popped up in many stories, including Vertigo’s crossover event The Children’s Crusade, the mini-series Sandman Presents: Dead Boy Detectives, and a 12-issue run in 2014. The Night Nurse’s comic storyline includes appearances in series like Justice League Dark, The Swamp Thing, and Trinity of Sin: Pandora.

How Night Nurse's Powers Can Help Edwin & Charles In Season 2

The Dead Boy Detectives could find the Night Nurse useful

While Night Nurse may not cross paths with Edwin and Charles in the comics, the Dead Boy Detectives season 1 ending leaves the agency with an official new, albeit unwilling, member, as the Night Nurse has been reassigned to work with them on Earth. Since her superior likened the Dead Boys Detective Agency to the role the Lost & Found plays, the Night Nurse will now be able to apply her abilities, including telekinesis, manipulation of memories, trauma recollection, and doorways to Hell, to all forms of supernatural villains and those in need of help — on top of her job of locating misplaced dead children.

Beyond her obvious powers, the Night Nurse knows far more about the bureaucracy of the Afterlife than Edwin and Charles do. If they need help from another department in the Afterlife, the Night Nurse is the only one with access. Additionally, being a stickler for rules could come in handy in situations where Edwin and Charles need another perspective on cases. However, seeing the Night Nurse step out of her comfort zone a little due to the proximity to Crystal and the detective duo would make for an even more interesting arc if Dead Boy Detectives season 2 is announced.
