During the "Darkest Hour" arc, Dark Specter has been on a warpath as he kidnaps and zombifies Power Rangers from the past, present, and future to form his Dark Ranger Army. It was established some issues prior that the only person immune to his dark spell is Tommy Oliver, thanks to his power coin. The White Ranger's power coin was made specifically to resist evil, thus making whichever Power Ranger who wields it incorruptible. Billy the Blue Ranger concocts a plan to use the coin to create a shield for a whole team of Rangers to be protected from corruption.

The only downside is that using Tommy's power coin to power a whole team takes away his ability to morph, but with the fate of the world on the line, Tommy is willing to make that sacrifice. The team chosen to benefit from his powers are as follows: Mighty Morphin's Blue, Pink, and Green (Matthew, not Tommy) Rangers, Ranger Slayer, Wild Force Yellow, Purple Dino Charge, and Drakkon Yellow. Along with generating a costume upgrade, the shared powers prevent the Rangers from being turned into Dark Specter's mindless minions.

Tommy easily could have refused this plan, especially knowing that going through with it effectively takes him off the board as a player against Dark Specter.

Instead, Tommy remembers that Rangerhood has never been a one-man show and that the Power Rangers do not succeed without teamwork. Being a team player, he gives up his power knowing that a team could benefit better than just one person. It's moments like these that remind readers why Tommy was the best Power Ranger of the 1990s. Being selfless allows Tommy Oliver's team to gain a much-needed edge against Dark Specter and now, the Power Rangers are one step closer to winning a monumental war with the strongest Rangers team on their side.
