Starfield Player Discovers One Of Gaming's Oldest Easter Eggs

Fans familiar with the Konami Code will recognize the homage to retro games in Starfield's hidden Easter egg.

While entering the Konami Code in Starfield doesn't unlock anything, it's still a fun reference.

In a game as big as Starfield, it stands to reason that even some of the most obvious Easter eggs would remain hidden for month after release but thanks to one eagle-eyed fan, the latest discovery is a throwback to the classic era of video games. Bethesda is known for sneaking in plenty of fun references to other titles in its massive RPGs, and while some can be quite on the nose, most are subtle nods of recognition. Starfield is no different, but to really appreciate this new find, one must be familiar with some classic hardware.

Posted to Reddit by user burried-to-deep, the player managed to grab a shot of a piece of paper next to a dead NPC that simply reads, "Cheat Codes" accompanied by a string of arrows, two letters, and "start."

Those familiar with retro games will no doubt recognize the note as a slightly different version of the Konami Code, an iconic series of inputs that the publisher used to protect secrets in many of its older games. The only difference is that Starfield's version features three downward arrow while the actual Konami Code only has two.

While burried-to-deep doesn't specify where exactly they discovered this reference to the Konami Code, it's nonetheless a fun nod to the games of yesteryear. Entering it while playing Starfield doesn't prompt any kind of unique Easter egg or discovery but it's still fun to speculate that, at one point in time, it may have unlocked some kind of special cheat. Given the sheer scale of Bethesda's sci-fi RPG, it stands to reason that other outposts or bases that players may have missed may have similar nods to older console generations so the community should look forward to finding more secrets.

As for the Konami Code itself, the string of inputs is most commonly associated with some of the developer's more challenging classics like Contra and the home console version of Gradius. Outside of Konami, the code has also been included in several other projects as a subtle reference; these include titles like Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, The Incredibles, and even recent releases like Anno 1800 and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The code has become one of the most famous pieces of gaming imagery and is often printed out and framed as decoration by many enthusiasts.

While the Starfield community may still be actively scrounging through the game looking for secrets, many are beginning to wonder what's next. Bethesda has remained relatively silent on the future of its RPG and while it's confirmed the development of the Shattered Space DLC, there's no word on when it will arrive. Fans have been left wondering what could be taking the developer so long to release substantial content updates, even though the studio has confirmed it is working on some "exciting" things.
