This 2-Second Star Wars Moment That Blew My Mind As A Kid Is Still The Peak Of Lightsabers
Summary Darth Maul's second-blade lightsaber ignition in The Phantom Menace remains one of the most iconic moments in the Star Wars franchise.
The upcoming Acolyte series on Disney+ may attempt to rival this memorable lightsaber moment.
Despite past attempts like Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber, the bar set by Darth Maul's lightsaber moment remains very high.
Star Wars' greatest lightsaber moment is only two seconds long, yet it still blew the collective minds of fans as a peak moment for the franchise. Set decades before the events of A New Hope, The Phantom Menace gave Star Wars fans a new look at a younger galaxy far, far away while also beginning a new trilogy focused on the origins of the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker. However, it also featured one of the coolest lightsaber sequences of all time.
Released in 1999, The Phantom Menace was the very first chapter of George Lucas' prequel trilogy. 25 years later, The Phantom Menace is one of the most beloved Star Wars movies with many of its biggest fans, kids at the time, having become grown adults. Although there have been several movies, shows, and many other pieces of Star Wars projects that have been released in the years that followed, many can and will argue that The Phantom Menace still holds the most mind-blowing Star Wars lightsaber moment thanks to Darth Maul.

A Mind-Blowing Game Changer

At the time, the idea of Darth Maul's iconic doubled-bladed lightsaber was a very exciting and brand-new concept many hadn't even thought of before the release of The Phantom Menace. Although there have been great lightsaber combat sequences across the Skywalker saga, the simple ignition of Darth Maul's second crimson lightsaber blade in Naboo's palace hangar still gives chills 25 years later. It's a moment that is certainly one of the film's best, if not one of the most iconic lightsaber moments in the entire Star Wars franchise.
The build-up to Darth Maul revealing his double-bladed lightsaber is excellent. Having already fought Qui-Gon Jinn with only a single blade on Tatooine, the reveal of the second blade comes as even more of a surprise once Maul intercepts Qui-Gon and Obi-Kenobi during the Battle of Naboo in the film's third act. It's also worth noting that this unique lightsaber has been made even more special by the fact that Darth Maul's double-bladed weapon is still the only one of its kind to be prominently featured in live-action (though others have sparingly been featured elsewhere, such as animation).
Rey Skywalker was originally intended to build and wield a double-bladed lightsaber in original drafts for Episode IX (not just the dark side vision version).
Can Star Wars Ever Top Darth Maul's Second Blade?
The Acolyte May Try...
There have certainly been admirable and exciting attempts by Star Wars to recreate The Phantom Menace's incredible lightsaber reveal with Darth Maul. This most notably includes Kylo Ren and his crossguard lightsaber featured in the sequel trilogy. However, the galaxy far, far away has arguably yet to feature a lightsaber moment as mind-blowing as Darth Maul's second blade ignition in the final act of The Phantom Menace.
To that end, perhaps that may finally be achieved in the upcoming live-action Acolyte series coming to Disney+. Set before the prequel during the High Republic Era, the show is set to feature Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh whose lightsaber was modified in the novels to give her a unique whip function. Combined with recent promises from The Acolyte's cast and crew that the show intends to rival the lightsaber combat seen in the prequels, perhaps Darth Maul may finally face some worthy competition for one of the best lightsaber moments of all time (though the bar is admittedly set pretty high).
The Acolyte is set to begin streaming June 4th on Disney+.
