Young Sheldon Season 7 Makes Meemaw’s Disappointing Big Bang Theory Role Worse

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9.

Summary Meemaw's lack of presence in The Big Bang Theory now seems like a missed opportunity, given her importance in Young Sheldon's storyline.

Sheldon's decision to go to Caltech sets up a new arc for the show that focuses on the boy genius, addressing previous storytelling issues.

Connie's excitement to visit Sheldon at college highlights how underutilized she was in The Big Bang Theory.

Sheldon is officially off to Caltech in Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9, and Meemaw's reaction even before this was finalized makes her already frustrating The Big Bang Theory role worse. After Young Sheldon deals with its storytelling focus problem, it finally gets its priority straight with a new arc that centers on the boy genius. While diversifying its storytelling has worked for the better of the show, Sheldon being lost in the shuffle since Young Sheldon retconned George's cheating scandal was worrying. Luckily, that may no longer be a cause for concern moving forward.

While Sheldon took the backseat in recent Young Sheldon season 7 episodes, the writers developed a string of arcs for other members of the Cooper family. Aside from Georgie and Mandy, who recently tied the knot, Meemaw has been getting a lot of attention from the show. On the heels of her illegal gambling den being shut down, Young Sheldon attempted to fix Meemaw and Sheldon's plot hole from The Big Bang Theory, with the boy genius even changing his future to ensure that his grandmother didn't go to jail. Now, it's Connie's turn to get involved with Sheldon's business.

As the Coopers huddle to lay out Sheldon's options for grad school in Young Sheldon season 7, episode 9, "A Fancy Article and a Scholarship for a Baby," George tells his son the top candidate for his next academic institution. Interestingly, the boy genius has been hands-off throughout the whole process, allowing his parents to sift through the organizations trying to recruit him. More peculiarly, Sheldon even suggests just staying at East Texas Tech to be close to family. Mary, however, reveals that the schools are willing to pay for his travels back home, and the family can even visit him.

Unfortunately, despite her eagerness, Meemaw only ended up visiting Sheldon once throughout the 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory, even though Mary came by countless times over the years.

That's when Meemaw expresses her excitement over the thought of traveling. At this point, Sheldon hasn't decided to go to Caltech yet, but Connie is particularly excited to be by the beach, which makes sense for someone who lives in a landlocked state. Unfortunately, despite her eagerness, Meemaw only ended up visiting Sheldon once throughout the 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory, even though Mary came by countless times over the years. Connie didn't even travel to Pasadena for Sheldon and Amy's wedding, which was a massive missed opportunity, considering her close bond with her grandson.

Why Meemaw Barely Appeared In The Big Bang Theory

Meemaw Should Have Visited California More.

Mary was the only Cooper family member regularly present in The Big Bang Theory. Missy and Georgie only appeared a handful of times, although both were regularly referenced by Sheldon. Considering this, it wasn't that big of a deal that Meemaw only visited Sheldon once in the nerd-centric sitcom. As Young Sheldon progressed, however, it became clear how big of a missed opportunity it was that she wasn't in the mothership series more frequently. Ultimately, the reason for Connie's limited The Big Bang Theory appearances was that the writers still didn't know how popular she would be in Young Sheldon.

Young Sheldon season 7 airs every Thursday, 8pm ET on CBS.
