What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #3
Close
Kaiju No. 8 episode #3, “Revenge Match”, quickly made Kikoru think Kafka smelled like a Kaiju a non-issue, and when Kafka tried to show off by covertly using his powers, Kikoru decided that she wanted to beat Kafka more than anyone else. Unfortunately for Kafka, he never did anything to fight against that, as Kafka’s refusal to use his Kaiju powers gave him the worst performance out of anyone, with Kafka even failing to synch with the special bodysuit the Defense Force uses to fight Kaiju.
The second stage of the exam had everyone fighting Kaiju within a time limit, and at first, Kafka was able to make up for his inability to use his suit with his knowledge of Kaiju biology and weaknesses. However, a surprise attack from a Kaiju left Kafka critically injured to the point that the instructor told him it was in his best interest to drop out. With the knowledge that Mina was watching, though, Kafka painfully stood back up, and as he did, Kafka finally began to synchronize with his suit, if only by a fraction of a percent.

Kaiju No. 8 Reveals What Makes Kafka A Unique Protagonist
One of the biggest takeaways from Kaiju No. 8 episode #3 is how it shows what Kafka’s special skill is supposed to be. Kafka’s Kaiju powers are how he can fight, yes, but as shown in the exam, Kafka’s experience as a Monster Sweeper gives him more intimate knowledge of Kaiju weaknesses than the average soldier, allowing him to fight in ways that won’t always revolve around him punching things. A protagonist who has both brains and brawn stands out a lot in shōnen anime, and it will be interesting to see how Kaiju No. 8 continues to develop that.
Be sure to watch Kaiju No. 8 episode #4 when it releases on Saturday, May 4.
