Pierce Brosnan's New Movie With Helen Mirren Is A Big Shift After Their 43-Year-Old Gangster Film

Summary Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan reunite after 43 years in 'The Thursday Murder Club.'

Mirren and Brosnan previously worked together in 'The Long Good Friday.'

'The Thursday Murder Club' will be their first film where they act opposite each other extensively.

A handful of cast members of a highly-anticipated movie were announced in April 2024, and Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan were among the names on the list, reuniting them after they previously appeared in a film that was released 43 years ago. Mirren starred as Victoria in The Long Good Friday, a British action movie directed by John Mackenzie and written by Barrie Keeffe. Meanwhile, Brosnan's character in the film did not have a name and was just credited as an "IRA man," aka a man who belonged to the Irish Republican Army.

The Long Good Friday is available to stream on Max.

The Long Good Friday centers around a crime boss — Harold Shand, played by Bob Hoskins — who wants to expand his empire. Harold seeks to form a partnership with and convince the American Mafia to give him money that would go towards building a venue in London that could serve for the Olympic Games. However, when bombings begin to kill his men, Harold stops at nothing to stop them (and to try to find a possible mole in his organization). Mirren's Victoria is Harold's girlfriend in the 1981 gangster movie, and Brosnan's character is someone who holds a grudge against Harold.

After working together on The Long Good Friday, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan will reunite on the set of The Thursday Murder Club. According to Variety, Mirren and Brosnan will be joined by Ben Kingsley in the movie's cast, which Chris Columbus is directing and writing. The Thursday Murder Club is based on Richard Osman's 2020 book of the same name and is expected to debut on Netflix after the streamer bought the rights to the film adaptation. Mirren and Brosnan's characters are unknown, but their roles will be very different from The Long Good Friday.

Despite their fame and acclaim, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan have rarely worked as co-stars.

Whereas Mirren was one of the main stars of The Long Good Friday and Brosnan's role was relatively small, the two actors will be on equal footing in The Thursday Murder Club. Mirren was a bigger star when the 1981 gangster movie was released, while Brosnan was making his feature film debut. However, after Brosnan landed the role of James Bond in the mid-1990s, he became a leading man and accumulated a much bigger star status (more equal to Mirren's level).

The Thursday Night Club's release date is unknown as it's still in the early pre-production stage.

It's Amazing Helen Mirren & Pierce Brosnan Haven't Appeared In More Movies Together

The Stars Have Only Worked Together On The Long Good Friday

Despite their fame and acclaim, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan have rarely worked as co-stars. They both appeared in The Long Good Friday, but Brosnan's role was so small that it's hard to say that they worked together on the film. Consequently, The Thursday Murder Club will be their first movie where they get to act opposite one another (extensively), and that was evidently made possible due to the impact that playing James Bond had on Brosnan's career.
