The Alien franchise is no stranger to video game adaptations but the announcement of a new game may be some of the most exciting news for fans of both the Xenomorph and virtual reality. It's been some time since Alien received a dedicated single-player horror game with the last title to attempt such a vision being 2014's Alien: Isolation. In the years that followed that excellent release, other projects have been released that managed to fulfill the power fantasy of battling the Aliens, like Aliens: Fireteam Elite and Aliens: Dark Descent, but it's arguably whether they're scary.

Per the official announcement trailer on YouTube, the upcoming Alien: Rogue Incursion is promising to return the franchise to its more terrifying roots with a VR game that tasks players with surviving against the titular Xenomorph.

Developed by Survios, the VR game will be released for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 3, and Steam and while details on the project are still scarce, fans can expect the title to arrive during the holiday season of 2024. Rumors allege that the protagonist of the single-player campaign will be a battle-hardened veteran with Xenomorph experience but this has yet to be confirmed.

Survios has stated that it's eager to eventually share more concrete details about Alien: Rogue Incursion with the public but in the interim it has stated that the game will be a celebration of the 45-year-old franchise and tap into many of the aspects the community has come to love. The story will be an original tale that will reportedly be set between Alien and its sequel Aliens and per the developers' official statement, several Xenomorphs will be present. Whether players will be taking on the role of a sole survivor of a powerful Colonial Marine remains to be seen.

While Alien: Rogue Incursion is the first game in the franchise to be created exclusively for VR, it's not the only one that can be experienced with such immersive terror. The aforementioned Alien: Isolation received a post-launch update which made it compatible with several VR headsets and many insist it's the best way to play the critically-acclaimed game. Creative Assembly's survival-horror title is widely regarded as the best Alien game due to its exquisitely crafted Xenomorph which boasts an intelligent AI that learns and adapts to the player's actions.

The Xenomorph in Alien: Isolation is so intelligent that many consider it to be one of the most advanced NPC enemies in any video games.

Whether Rogue Incursion manages to tap into similar technology, the existence of another Alien game is still great news for fans of the franchise. The game will come out just a few months after the eagerly-anticipated Alien: Romulus, the seventh mainline entry in the film series which is currently slated to hit theaters on August 16. Directed by Fede Álvarez, enthusiasts are hopeful that it manages to deliver all the thrills and chills for which the franchise is known.
