As the text in the trailer suggested, Tales of the Empire will show there is only one path to the dark side, and the Empire. The trailer also showed some scenes of how that path eventually leads to death and destruction, such as the Inquisitors' hunt for an unknown Jedi. While the path itself is well known in Star Wars, why Barriss and Morgan decided to follow it remains a mystery.

Tales Of The Empire Will Show Why Two Characters Join The Empire
Close
While there may only be one path to the dark side, there are several reasons why someone would choose to follow it. Both Barriss and Morgan are incredibly complex characters, so it should be interesting to see their exact reasoning for joining the tyrannical group. While there's no telling for sure how their stories will play out until Tales of the Empire is released, there are some clues from each character's backstories.
Tales of the Empire is set to premiere on May 4 on Disney+.
As the trailer indicated, Morgan Elsbeth's decision to join the Empire seems to be influenced by a massacre committed by General Grievous. Morgan was a Nightsister of Dathomir, a member of an ancient, evil Force cult. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, many members of the Nightsisters were slaughtered after Count Dooku sent General Grievous to their planet, and it seems Morgan was one of the few survivors. It also seems that the tragedy filled Morgan with hatred, which then spurred her to contact Admiral Thrawn and begin her allegiance with him.
Barriss Offee The Mirialan apprentice of Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee became disillusioned with the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars. She ultimately betrayed the Jedi, even launching a terrorist attack on the Jedi Temple itself, and framed Ahsoka for the crime. Exposed, Barriss was imprisoned - but she was recovered by the Empire shortly after Revenge of the Sith, joining the ranks of the Imperial Inquisitors. Morgan Elsbeth Hailing from the planet Dathomir, Morgan Elsbeth's people were almost wiped out during the Clone Wars after their leader, Mother Talzin, became a rival to Darth Sidious himself. Morgan swore loyalty to the Empire, and became a close associate of Grand Admiral Thrawn himself. When Thrawn was stranded in a distant galaxy, she spearheaded efforts to retrieve him, prompted by visions cast by the Great Mothers of Peridea. She was sacrificed by Thrawn to buy him time to escape Peridea, with Ahsoka and her allies stranded there. Also in The Clone Wars, Barriss Offee left the Jedi Order in climactic fashion, by bombing the Jedi Temple. Barriss committed her act of treason because she saw the faults of the Jedi Order and its involvement in the Clone Wars, which led her to the dark side. Barriss now has a chance to reexamine her commitment to the dark side during her Inquisitor training. Their path is set, but the only way to tell for sure why Barriss and Morgan chose the Empire, and what the true implications of such a decision, will be by watching Tales of the Empire.
