A new poster for Alex Garland's Civil War reveals which states are in an alliance, aside from the Western Forces made up of California and Texas. The dystopian film follows a group of journalists traveling the war-torn United States during a future Second Civil War, documenting the struggles of survival and wartime among the fighting populations. This includes looking at the dictatorship the US has become and the factions involved in warring for or against it.

Now, A24 has released a new poster for the upcoming Civil War movie, showcasing a detailed map of which states are in an alliance.

The map shows California and Texas are part of the Western Forces, which was previously teased in trailers for the movie. This new map reveals the southeast corner of the US has formed the Florida Alliance, while the northwest corner is the New People's Army. Every other state is labeled as "Loyalist States," indicating their allegiance to the tyrannical federal government.

What Civil War's Different US Factions Mean

The United States Is More Divided Than Ever Before

The many different factions in Civil War showcase just how divided the United States is in the war-torn future Garland has created. The Loyalist States appear to be those that are aligned with the federal government, while every other faction is seemingly against what the US has become. However, since these three other separatist groups don't seem to be allied with each other, they all may want to instill leadership over the US in their own way.

Since positive reviews for Civil War praise its themes and the questions its story posits, the movie no doubt delves deep into why the US is divided into so many different sides. The Western Forces appear to be the most unique case, with California and Texas separated from one another by Loyalist States. While the movie is going to take place in the midst of the war, it will likely also focus on the US' alternate history, explaining how both states ended up becoming allies.

With this new map of the movie offering more context to how the US is split up, it makes for the perfect companion to Civil War to understand what to expect in the film. It's possible a similar map will be shown in the movie as well, fully illustrating how the country is divided as it explores what this means for its dystopian future. Since the movie will be arriving in theaters later this month, it won't be long until answers surrounding the new makeup of the United States are provided.

Why Civil War's Multiple US Factions Helps Make The Movie Better

Multiple Factions Showcase People's Complicated Political Viewpoints

While the cause of Civil War's conflict remains unclear, it appears to be influenced by Nick Offerman's President character seizing control of the nation in a tyrannical way. The resulting factions that spawn because of this decision may want to instill their own forms of government when ousting him. While one of the factions may want to return to a democratic republic, it's just as possible they all have their own ideas as to how the country should evolve going forward. This could include more democratic ideals, or similar authoritarianism to the President.

By having multiple factions be part of the movie, Civil War can capture the multifaceted ways in which Americans are now divided. It's possible the movie will also utilize its commentary as a way to reflect modern day politics and the strong divisions they cause. Since the film will be from the perspective of journalists, it might present the US factions in an objective light. However, the beliefs of the characters will no doubt also form important distinctions surrounding how war has impacted everyone.

Will Civil War End With One Side Winning?

The Many Sides Of The Movie Make Its Outcome Unclear

While excitement for Civil War may stem from learning about what each faction in the movie believes, there's also the possibility that the movie will showcase which side of the war will win. This could make for an interesting commentary on American politics depending on which of the many factions winds up in control of the country by the end. However, if one side were to win, Garland's movie could be accused of favoring a specific political ideology. This makes it far more likely the film will be a snapshot of a divided, dystopian future than about one side triumphing.

It's also possible the movie ends with no side winning, instead destroying one another - and thus the entire country - in a massive convergence of ideology. This divided version of America could be doomed to destroy itself, a potent commentary on how division and strife ultimately lead to chaos and destruction for everyone involved. No matter how Civil War plays out, though, the movie will clearly demonstrate why the US is divided into so many sides - and what war means for its dystopian future.

Civil War arrives in theaters on April 12.
