A Clever Workaround Sends One Of BG3's Greatest Villains Back To The Nine Hells

Summary Mizora in Baldur's Gate 3 can be killed using some clever loopholes involving ability score reductions and status effects, not traditional damage.

Mizora is still technically immortal outside the game, but players can still find satisfaction in getting rid of her.

Be cautious when attempting to kill Mizora, as it can impact Wyll's quest line and there are potential negative consequences to consider.

There's a secret way to kill the most hated Baldur's Gate 3 character, despite their technical immortality. Most characters, even some of the deadliest bosses, are mortal in BG3. But there's one particular villain who, despite the player's best efforts to get rid of them, keeps popping back up to ruin their life. They greatly overstay their welcome, and then some. There's even a mechanic that technically prevents them from taking damage, even if it doesn't specifically preclude them from dying.

But as with almost every quest in Baldur's Gate 3, there's a clever workaround to get rid of them once and for all. After all, damage isn't the only way to kill someone in the Forgotten Realms. With a little cleverness and a lot of preparation, it's fairly easy to send the biggest villain in BG3 packing. Some players may even have most of the tools they need already. However, unless it's timed properly and executed perfectly, it can lead to far more trouble than it's worth.

A Clever Workaround Lets Players Kill Mizora In BG3

Kill Mizora Without Breaking Wyll's Pact

Close

Although it's normally not possible, Reddit user Finnick00 has discovered a way to kill Mizora permanently without breaking Wyll's pact. There's a clause in Wyll's pact that guarantees Mizora's protection. It's the reason he and the party are compelled to save Mizora at Moonrise Towers in Act Two. As a result, neither he nor anyone he's allied with is allowed to bring her harm. If they do, Wyll's pact will be broken immediately, he'll be carted off to the Hells, and his father, Duke Ulder Ravengard, will die.

Of course, it's entirely possible to attack Mizora, but it won't do any good. She has a permanent status effect called "Zariel's Protection," which prevents her from taking damage. Once she's attacked, she'll zip off to the Hells and simply return after a minute or so, slightly miffed but none the worse for wear. The only official way to kill her in-game is to activate the Mind Flayer pod she's trapped inside during Act Two, but even that's not the best idea. It'll earn everyone's disapproval, and Wyll will no longer be available as a playable companion.

So, players are kind of stuck with Mizora unless they use this clever loophole. As it turns out, reducing any ability score to zero kills a BG3 character, just as well as if it were their HP. Stacking several ability point-draining abilities can kill Mizora easily, and doing so doesn't register as a violation of Wyll's pact. Players will need a wizard in their party with the Illithid power Ability Drain, a cleric or druid with the spell contagion, and a party member who has accepted the Astral-Touched Tadpole in Baldur's Gate 3 and taken the ability Absorb Intellect.

Gale can take Ability Drain if he's been convinced to take Illithid Powers. Shadowheart, Halsin, or Jaheira can learn contagion beginning at level 9.

From there, it's as simple as having the wizard cast any spell using an attack roll on Mizora - fire bolt works just fine. Ability Drain takes the ability the caster used, and reduces the equivalent ability of the target. Repeat this until her Intelligence drops to one. Next, the cleric or druid will need to cast contagion: mindfire, which should cause Mizora to become confused and hostile. Finally, the character with Absorb Intellect must use that ability, so her Intelligence hits zero. At that point, she'll teleport away as if she's been attacked, then reappear and die.

Mizora's stats can be viewed at any time with the Inspect feature, by rolling the cursor over her and pressing down on the D-Pad on a controller, or T on a keyboard. Press L3/LS to free the cursor on a controller.

Many details about this route suggest that it's a bug, not an intended feature. For one thing, killing Mizora this way completely breaks Wyll's quest line, so it's advised that players finish it before attempting this method. Also, if the player fails to cast contagion: mindfire on Mizora before using Absorb Intellect, Wyll (along with Duke Ulder, if he's at camp) will become hostile as well, removing him permanently from the playable party. Plus, even if everything goes smoothly, Wyll doesn't acknowledge Mizora's death. He may even say he's going off to hunt her after the final boss is defeated.

Mizora Can Also Be Killed With Flesh To Stone In BG3

A Similar, If Less Permanent, Way To Safely Get Revenge On Mizora

There is another way to get one over on Mizora, but it's not necessarily as reliable. Remember, Zariel's Protection shields her from damage, but conditions and debuffs work perfectly fine. Players can also use the sixth level warlock/wizard spells flesh to stone and flesh to gold to permanently petrify Mizora, but they don't always work. This is an especially satisfying way to get rid of her, though, since Wyll can do it himself.

Once either of these spells is cast, Mizora will disappear for a time as if damaged. However, when she reappears, the status effect will still be active. She'll have three opportunities - Constitution saving throws - to escape petrification. If all three fail, she'll die, and the player will get a nice little statue of Mizora for their troubles. However, this may have the same negative effects on Wyll's quest line as the Ability Drain route, so it's advised to wait until after that's finished.

Mizora Is Actually Immortal In BG3

Zariel's Protection Or Not, Mizora Can't Be Killed

But here's the problem: no matter how players kill Mizora, she's not actually dead according to Forgotten Realms lore. Once her physical form dies outside the Nine Hells, she'll just wake up back at home as if nothing ever happened. Of course, killing her or turning her to stone will remove her from the player's game. They won't have to deal with her anymore, so it's beneficial for that fact alone. Still, they should know that she's still canonically out there somewhere, recovering and waiting for her next chance to strike.

So ultimately, killing Mizora is a futile endeavor - but that doesn't mean it's not satisfying. Once the player has finished Wyll's quest, if they're not satisfied enough with the results, they can go looking for revenge. Just don't expect it to be easy. Getting rid of Mizora may require some respeccing to ensure every character has the right abilities for the job, and there are many points at which the process may fail with an unlucky dice roll. Still, it's one of the more satisfying ways to end Wyll's quest in Baldur's Gate 3.
