Batman Beats Death (Again) with a Brand New "Dramatic Return" to Gotham
Warning! Contains spoilers for Detective Comics #1084!
Summary Batman makes a dramatic return to Gotham by burning his bat symbol into a skyscraper.
Choosing drama over strategy, he wants everyone to know he's back to inspire fear.
Batman's theatrical flair and penchant for dramatic entrances shines in Detective Comics #1084.
Batman was recently run out of Gotham City and presumed dead by everyone he was forced to leave behind. Of course, Batman eventually makes his self-admitted "dramatic return" in a new issue of Detective Comics. Looking over Batman's history, despite his serious and stoic personality, it's clear that Bruce really does seem to have a penchant for drama and loves making a dramatic return when he can.
Batman once again shows off his love for "dramatic returns" in Detective Comics #1084 by Ram V. and Javier Fernández. Not only does he make a dramatic entrance as he dispatches a group of criminals and an Azmer, but later, he uses explosive charges to create his bat symbol in a skyscraper, showing everyone that Batman has fully returned to Gotham City. It's a great moment that gives hope to everyone in Gotham and also reminds them of Batman's existence, but it's also a moment for Batman to simply indulge himself a bit.
Burning the symbol into the building isn't exactly the most tactical choice available to Batman. If everyone thought he was dead, it likely would've been much better for him to simply allow the Orgham family to continue thinking he was dead while he began dismantling their operation. Instead, Batman makes sure that everyone knows he's back. In a Gotham that has forgotten Batman exists, nothing reminds them like a giant burning Bat-symbol on a skyscraper.

Batman Announces His Return to Gotham
Bruce Wayne Returns with Style
Unlike the Flash, Robin, and even Alfred, Batman is one of the few DC characters who has never actually died. Though Superman eventually came back after the iconic The Death of Superman, he was still considered dead. The closest Batman has ever got to dying was in Final Crisis — but this was just Darkseid sending Bruce back in time while everyone else believed him to be dead. This resulted in Batman traveling through time as he tried to return to Gotham. When he did, he specifically kept it a secret and allowed Dick Grayson to continue acting as Batman until Bruce was ready to make his public return in grand fashion.
DC recently celebrated the anniversary of the influential Death of Superman story by a number of iconic creators, including Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, Roger Stern, and more. The story is available now in a variety of collected editions from DC Comics.
Revealing his return like this helps play on one of Batman's biggest strengths: creating fear. While it would likely make the most sense to simply sneak through Gotham and take the Orgham family down before they realize he's still alive, Bruce wants to remind the Orgham family, and Gotham City, that he still exists. The Orgham family was doing its best to erase Batman's legacy from Gotham and had succeeded in making the majority of citizens forget him, so bringing his symbol back as a fiery mark on a skyscraper not only strikes fear into the Orgham family but reminds them the citizens of who their protector is as well.
Batman Makes Sure Everyone Knows He's Returned
And Who Could Miss This?
Batman has always gone out of his way to scare his villains, and he's spent the majority of his life with Alfred Pennyworth, a known theater major. It's no surprise that Bruce would pick up a flare for the dramatic, and he's used it over and over again as Batman to strike terror into the hearts of criminals. As every horror film shows, there's nothing scarier than seeing the return of a character, usually the killer, that everyone thought was dead. Batman has expertly used this principle time and time again when he returns after everyone thought he was lost.
