"I Had a Dream I Was a Jedi": Star Wars Officially Reveals The Jedi Anakin Skywalker Should Have Become

This post contains a PREVIEW for Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1

Summary Anakin Skywalker dreamed of becoming a Jedi to free Tatooine's slaves.

Anakin's dream and desire to help others as a Jedi is revealed in Marvel's upcoming Phantom Menace special.

Padmé helped fulfill Anakin's dream by freeing slaves on Tatooine.

Star Wars is set to officially reveal Anakin Skywalker's Jedi dream from before the events of The Phantom Menace. Originating from Tatooine as a young slave along with his mother, Anakin Skywalker desired more for both his life and his mother's. As such, that included having enough power to free both himself and Shmi Skywalker from the desert planet's widespread slavery.

As seen in a new preview for Marvel Comics' canonical Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1, the dream Anakin told Qui-Gon Jinn he had about becoming a Jedi is fully revealed. Having envisioned himself as an adult Jedi Knight coming to free his mother and all of Tatooine's slaves, it's a very different version of Anakin than the one he ends up becoming once Qui-Gon secures his freedom to begin his Jedi training as seen in the first prequel movie. Born to Shmi Skywalker with no father, Anakin Skywalker began his life in slavery. Originally owned by Gardulla the Hutt, Shmi and Anakin were eventually lost to the Toydarian Watoo who won them in a podracing bet. It wasn't until Anakin was 9 that he encountered Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn who recognized his great power in the Force and sought to train him in the ways of the Jedi, believing him to be the long prophesied Chosen One. As such, it's rather telling that Anakin, a child with an incredibly high midi-chlorian count and was seemingly conceived by the midi-chlorians themselves, had dreams about becoming a Jedi Knight.

That being said, it's not all that surprising that a young slave boy dreamed about one day becoming an idealized heroic Jedi Knight with the power to free his mother and all the rest of Tatooine's slaves. Additionally, the galactic slave trade would become a very sore subject for Anakin when he finally became a Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars, even after the death of his mother as seen in Attack of the Clones. Regardless, it's fascinating to see the kind of Jedi Anakin wished he be, years before he became one for real.

Why Didn't Anakin Ever Go Back?

Padmé Helped Complete Anakin's Dream

Once the realities of the Jedi Order set in combined with the loss of his mother, it does make a certain amount of sense as to why Anakin didn't ever return to Tatooine to free the slaves like he'd dreamed. Likewise, the dawn of the Clone Wars and commanding the 501st Legion kept him occupied right up to his corruption to the dark side as Darth Vader, That said, his wife Padmé did end up creating a network on Tatooine to free several slaves, an operation that was spearheaded by her former handmaid Sabé who'd been her primary confidant and decoy when she was Naboo's Queen.

Regardless, it will be exciting to learn more about Anakin's past when the full Star Wars: Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special releases. Additionally, Anakin's Jedi dream is only one of multiple stories to be found in the upcoming special issue. After all, it's been reported that the full issue will contain five all-new stories set before, after, and during The Phantom Menace.
