Knuckles Secretly Reveals A Major Change For Shadow’s Backstory In Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Knuckles & the video game Sonic Adventure 2!

Summary Knuckles hints at Shadow's presence on Earth 50 years ago, potentially altering his backstory for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

A line in the final scene offers a key clue suggesting Shadow's past may involve Earth, not just the Space Colony ARK.

The 1974 bowling alley incident implies a major shift in Shadow's story, possibly taking place more on Earth than it does in the game series.

Knuckles secretly revealed a key change for Shadow's backstory ahead of his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, revealing how his appearance in the film may be different from the video game series. The Knuckles TV show ended with the red Echidna defeating the Buyer alongside Wade. While most of the battle happened outside a Reno, Nevada bowling alley, the fight originally begins with Knuckles being thrown through a wall onto the lanes. This later prompts an observation from the commentators, which could have major implications for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Knuckles Hints At Shadow Being On Earth 50 Years Ago

A Line In The Final Scene Offers A Major Sonic 3 Clue

While commenting on Knuckles being thrown through the wall of the bowling alley, one of the commentators reflects how an alien interrupted a previous tournament in 1974. While Knuckles doesn't explicitly reveal what year it takes place, the previous encounter with aliens at a bowling alley happened 50 years before the show's release. Sonic the Hedgehog 2's post-credits scene also established Project Shadow was shut down over 50 years earlier, meaning the dates could theoretically align. This means Shadow could have been on Earth prior to the events of the movies.

In his debut game Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow was a creation of Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's grandfather, who tried using the hedgehog to cure his granddaughter Maria of a fatal illness. However, the Project was forcefully shuttered by G.U.N., who invaded the ARK, imprisoning Gerald and killing Maria. However, Maria managed to get Shadow to Earth in an escape pod, where he was later captured himself. Yet the implication he ended up at a bowling alley in 1974 means there could be a significant alteration to Shadow's backstory in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

How Shadow Being On Earth Changes His Sonic 3 Backstory

Shadow's Time On Earth Could Change The ARK's Role - If It Still Exists

The implication of the commentators' statements is that Shadow was free on Earth 50 years ago, attending a bowling tournament where something may have gone awry. This might mean the ARK in the movie universe has ways of easily transporting its inhabitants back and forth, perhaps giving Shadow and Maria more freedom to explore the planet. The 1974 bowling tournament could be where the climax happens, with Shadow being captured on Earth instead of aboard the ARK. It's also possible his entire backstory takes place on Earth, with the sequel's Shadow story leaving the ARK out entirely.

Given how iconic the ARK is, though, it seems unlikely Sonic the Hedgehog 3's plot won't include such a major part of Shadow's backstory from the games. Instead, it's more likely the Ultimate Lifeform traversed Earth at some point, either before or after the Space Colony was seized by the government. Since Knuckles doesn't provide any concrete information about this 1974 alien, there's no way of knowing what point of Shadow's backstory this information connects to. But, given the 50-year time gap, it's reasonable to presume Shadow's story is about to take an unpredictable turn when he finally debuts.

All episodes of Knuckles are now streaming on Paramount+. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives in theaters on December 20, 2024.
