Psych's continued success could lead to more films in the future, with the potential for past characters to make appearances.
Psych actor Jimmi Simpson, who played Mary Lightly in the hit series, has given an update on the possibility of his character returning for the upcoming Psych 4 movie. The detective comedy-drama series premiered on July 7, 2006, and ran for a total of eight seasons and 120 episodes, with the series finale airing on March 26, 2014. Since the conclusion of the show, the franchise has spawned five novels and three movies so far, and another movie titled Psych 4 is currently in development.
During an interview with Screen Rant's Caitlin Tyrrell to discuss the upcoming Apple TV+ sci-fi show Dark Matter, which is due to premiere on May 8, 2024, Simpson was asked about the chances of him returning for Psych 4, and, though he seemed to rule it out, he did leave the door open for his character to return in future installments, mentioning how co-star and producer James Roday is always coming to him with new ideas, and that he finds them exciting. Read Simpson's comments below:
Jimmi Simpson: Here's the thing: James Roday Rodriguez is my ride or die. Half the time, early on, the reason why Mary [Lightly] kept coming back is because I needed health insurance. James was like, "Well, I'll come to the reason why Mary's back." So, I will always be a part of Psych. That will not be the last one. He's always throwing ideas at me of like, "What about this? What about this?" And I'm always like, Yes, yes, yes." Mary will never die, don't worry.
Is There A Future For More Psych Movies?
How Likely Is It That Simpson Will Be Involved?
Close
As a very successful and popular franchise, there is plenty of room for Psych to spawn more movies, with a rumored three additional films in the works. Whilst ranking the Psych seasons and movies will differ from person to person, it seems clear that the franchise has continued to be a success despite the show ending a decade ago. Simpson's comments suggest he believes the franchise can continue to endure, and that there will be more Psych movies made in the years to come.
The appeal of the franchise is such that there could be many more movies made in the future, and, with the number of guest stars who spoofed their past roles on Psych, there is still creative appeal for big stars to want to be involved in the franchise. Whilst the storyline for the upcoming movie is under wraps right now, there is a good chance that some missing Psych characters could appear in Psych 4, and this provides a fun chance for exploring new storylines, and linking back to past ones.
As of January 2023, Psych started airing on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.
There is no release date as yet for Psych 4, and, though Simpson has ruled himself out of an appearance, the success of the movie could lead to more Psych films in the future, and Simpson could play a role in those. Much will depend on the actor's schedule, but his appearances in Psych: The Movie and Psych 2: Lassie Come Home show the actor is dedicated to finding time to appear in the franchise, as long as the storyline and time are right.
