The Most Frustrating Starfield Feature Is Officially Being Reworked
Summary Starfield will address its unusable city maps in upcoming updates, making navigation in dense locales easier for players.
Fans hope that Bethesda's improvements in future patches will save Starfield from mixed reviews and lingering issues.
While waiting for the Shattered Space DLC in 2024, players can use mods to solve problems.
Starfield should hopefully become significantly easier to play thanks to an upcoming update that will address one of the game's most hated issues. Following the launch of Bethesda Game Studios' hotly-anticipated sci-fi RPG, players were immediately disappointed by maps of cities provided in the game because they were largely unusable. In especially dense locales filled with walkways, corridors, and interiors that can be explored, having a map that doesn't show any kind of layout makes navigating these sprawling urban environments nearly impossible if one doesn't have a photographic memory.
Fortunately, per an interview with Kinda Funny, Starfield's creative director Todd Howard confirmed that the team is currently working hard on fixing the game's city maps and an upcoming update will finally address the issue.
"We redid the map stuff, so we have some city map stuff," Howard responded when questioned about what specific changes the community can expect to see in future patches. Besides this tidbit, precious little else was disclosed about the game's future besides some new ship-building content and the implementation of the Creation Kit.

Could It Be Too Late For Starfield?
While Howard did confirm that the next patch will be announced in the next few days and that another "big update" is currently being planned for the near future, it's worth speculating as to whether this will be enough to save Starfield. The received mixed reviews upon its launch with many fans holding out hope that Bethesda would improve the experience with post-release updates and patches and while some of these have been pushed out, many issues remain. Players have criticized the developer for not prioritizing the correct problems.
The most recent patch introduced a better Photo Mode and made some adjustments to lockpicking while focusing on fixing hundreds of bugs scattered throughout Starfield. While this was certainly a step in the right direction, many felt the implementation of a revamped Photo Mode wasn't what the game really needed, requesting that Bethesda focus on problems like the aforementioned city maps and the barren planets. Whether these will be fixed in subsequent patches remains to be seen.
Starfield players are also holding out hope for the Shattered Space DLC, a larger expansion that is expected to continue the game's story while also adding several new mechanics for users to discover. Howard has confirmed that this add-on will be available in 2024 but a specific release date has yet to be locked down. In the interim, players will just need to make ample use of mods to solve many of the lingering problems that still haunt the galaxy.
