Building mechanics in TOTK allow players to push boundaries and create impressive, innovative contraptions.
It's not often that one gets to climb into a gigantic tank in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but one talented player managed to do just that by creating a powerful vehicle that serves as a homage to another classic video game series. Thanks to the incredible building mechanics available in the latest Zelda game, the community has spent thousands of collective hours pushing the system to its limits in an effort to create as many wonderful contraptions as possible. This build is one such instance of hours of effort paying off with a functional death machine.
Posted to X (formerly Twitter) by user saiotoko002, the clip they shared shows the player entering into a massive tank that's a clear reference to the titular tank in the beloved Metal Slug franchise.
To further sell the vision, certain UI elements from SNK's side-scrolling action have been stitched into the video as the hulking behemoth of a vehicle rolls up on a squad of Moblins before blowing them all to bits. The creator is rewarded with a fun "Mission Complete!" pop-up that will be instantly familiar to any and all Metal Slug fans.

Creating anything as massive as a Metal Slug in Tears of the Kingdom is an impressive feat but what makes saiotoko002's creation even more impressive is the build's shocking accuracy. Everything from the treads to the functional main cannon in the center and the side-mounted gun means the tank is instantly iconic to the one that can be found in the Metal Slug games. While it takes an eye-watering amount of power to fun for any measure of time, its combat effectiveness is clear as it dishes out pain with ease.
While the story of the Metal Slug tank can be sparse in the video games, it's undoubtedly the most recognizable part of SNK's franchise. Players are able to encounter the vehicles in particular levels and can commandeer them to cause all kinds of wanton chaos with the enemy forces thanks to the omnidirectional twin Vulcan cannons attached to its rear. Despite its imposing size, it can still be easily destroyed by a stray grenade so players must still be cautious when leaping into a Metal Slug.
Metal Slug and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may not have a great deal more in common but seeing their worlds collide in such an intensive build is genuinely impressive. Players have taken the game's crafting mechanics, about which many fans were initially skeptical, and used them to fundamentally break the experience in innovative ways. Given that the game is just under a year old at the time of writing, many more creative builds are likely still to be shared.
