Since Dead Boy Detectives maintains an air of mystery surrounding David the Demon's fate, it can be hard not to wonder what happened to him. In its eight-episode runtime, Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives primarily focuses on the adventures of its titular characters, Edwin and Charles, who solve supernatural mysteries with Crystal and Niko. Although Crystal initially struggles to get rid of David The Demon in Dead Boy Detectives, she finally finds answers when she starts learning about the true scope of her powers. During one of her showdowns with Esther, she begins harnessing her ancestral abilities, allowing her to acquire the powers to fight back against David. With what follows, she intentionally approaches David, hoping he will open her a portal to hell and help find Edwin. David, as expected, refuses to comply with her request and sees their encounter as an opportunity to torment her. Little does he realize Crystal is stronger than ever.

After learning that David will keep trailing and torturing her, Crystal finally reaches the end of her wits and shows him what she is capable of. When David claims she cannot kill him, she breaks it to him that she does not have to kill him when she can bury him alive. Before David can even process her claims, Crystal takes him to her ancestral plane and buries him beside a magic tree. Before finding himself underground, David tries to get inside Crystal's head by assuring her that he is willing to help. Crystal, however, does not fall for the demon's tricks and shoves him underground.

After Crystal buries the demon beside the tree on her ancestral plane, she returns to the human realm and reunites with Jenny. Before she and Jenny can flee the scene, David awakens and asks them where he is. David's inability to remember how he ended up there suggests the demon was merely using him as a conduit to fit into the human world. He had possessed him to disguise himself as a human and prey on vulnerable people like Crystal.

Even from a thematic standpoint, Dead Boy Detectives portrays David's characterization as a metaphor for Crystal's inner demons from her past life before she lost her memory. While David can still represent Crystal's torrid past, David's final scene with Crystal and Jenny establishes that he actually existed as a real demon and was capable of causing havoc in Crystal's world. The fact that David was real also raises the possibility that Crystal may not have entirely defeated him.

Before Crystal buries him alive, David tells her that demons like him cannot be killed. This suggests that, despite being underground, David the Demon is still alive. Crystal's ancestor, Iris, also tells her that David's body cannot stay beside the tree for long because it could gradually harm the tree. This would mean that either Crystal or her ancestors would eventually let him loose. However, given how David now knows how much stronger Crystal has become, he may avoid troubling her.

Another possibility is that Crystal's growing strength will appeal to him even more, and he will double down on his efforts to possess her.
