Why Power Rangers’ Most Iconic 1990s Villain Never Appeared On The TV Show
Summary Ivan Ooze only appeared in the 1995 movie, not in the TV show or comics.
Ivan Ooze's design and humor perfectly suited the Power Rangers universe.
Power Rangers: The Movie remains a standalone classic, non-canon but nostalgic.
One of the most iconic Power Rangers villains of all time never actually appeared on the TV show and has only one appearance in the franchise. More than 30 years after the premiere of Mighty Morphin, the Power Rangers universe has seen countless villains between major antagonists and monsters-of-the-week. Most of them originated from Super Sentai shows, but characters like Lord Zedd or Astronema were created for Power Rangers. Even though Power Rangers continues to release new series and comic book runs, the nostalgia over the original show has shaped the franchise for years.
This is why it is quite common for Mighty Morphin characters to return in other Power Rangers projects. For example, Netflix’s Power Rangers: Once & Always brought the original Blue and Black Rangers back for a story that also saw the return of other legacy MMPR characters like Rocky, Kat, Aisha, and Adam. Power Rangers Cosmic Fury had the original Blue Ranger as one of its protagonists, and the comics continue to reinvent the Mighty Morphin era. Therefore, it can be surprising to realize that one of the most popular Power Rangers villains never returned after his original appearance.
Ivan Ooze Never Appeared In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Ivan Ooze only showed up in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Prolific actor Paul Freeman played Ivan Ooze in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995), the first and only appearance of the character in all of Power Rangers history. Ivan Ooze was created for the Power Rangers movie, meaning he had never appeared or been referenced before 1995. Ooze was also an original Power Rangers creation instead of a Super Sentai character, even though the 1995 film also incorporated elements from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, Gosei Sentai Dairanger, and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger. Almost 30 years later, Ivan Oooze never returned in another Power Rangers movie or TV show.
From his name to his design, everything about Ivan Ooze suited Power Rangers perfectly.
It must be noted that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was not canon to the TV show. In other words, none of the events of the film happened in the official Power Rangers chronology that goes from Mighty Morphin to Cosmic Fury. Power Rangers: The Movie took place in a separate universe, even though it featured the cast of Mighty Morphin season 2. Additionally, the movie was distributed by 20th Century Fox, meaning there were likely legal reasons that prevented characters and concepts from appearing on the show.

Therefore, both from a story perspective and a behind-the-scenes perspective, Ivan Ooze couldn't return. The events of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie were sort of retold in Mighty Morphin season 3 during the Ninjetti arc. The overarching storyline was the same – the Rangers had lost their powers and needed new ones. However, instead of going to Dulcea, the Rangers meet with Ninjetti, creator of the Power Rangers. As such, not only is MMPR: The Movie non-canon, but it also contradicts the events of the show and vice versa.
Why Ivan Ooze Was Such A Great Villain In Power Rangers: The Movie
It doesn’t get more "1990s villain" than Ivan Ooze
From his name to his design, everything about Ivan Ooze suited Power Rangers perfectly. While creating original Power Rangers characters and suits is tricky – the reception to the Cosmic Fury costumes proves it – the 1995 movie succeeded in crafting an unforgettable antagonist with no Super Sentai counterpart. Ivan Ooze was as silly as Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa were in MMPR, yet he was also a menacing villain who almost killed Zordon. After hundreds of episodes in which neither Rita nor Zedd ever got close to the Rangers, seeing a villain actually interact with the heroes was great.

Freeman’s performance as Ivan Ooze was exactly what a 1990s Power Rangers villain asked for. Ivan Oooze’s puns and villainous laughs could not have been more cartoonish, and this was exactly what the movie needed. Another major difference between Ooze and the villains from the show is that the former never sent other monsters after the Rangers, except for the Tengu warriors. Ivan Oooze is the monster who grows up at the end and fights the Megazord, something that neither Rita Repulsa nor Lord Zedd ever did in the TV show.
Ivan Ooze Hasn’t Appeared In The Power Rangers Comics Either
Not even the Power Rangers multiverse could bring Ooze back
BOOM! Studios Power Rangers comics have delivered a lot of storylines and character moments that fans of the original show had only dreamed of seeing. From Jason, Trini, and Zack having a better reason to leave the Power Rangers than just a peace conference to Red Ranger Andros working with Zordon’s former pupils before the events of In Space, the Power Rangers comics have massively expanded the scope of the franchise. This was particularly true in the Shattered Grid event, during which countless Rangers from all timelines and universes came together to defeat Lord Drakkon.

The comics even brought forgotten Super Sentai teams into Power Rangers canon, such as the one from Dairanger. However, even when Power Rangers made an effort to establish a multiverse, the characters from the 1995 movie were not included. It can be assumed that the comics could not use characters and designs from any of the movies, including the 2017 film. This is why, despite leaving heavily into the multiverse, the current line of Power Rangers comics never revisited Ivan Ooze or brought back the Mighty Morphin team from the failed reboot.
Power Rangers #5 (2021) included an alien character who resembled Ivan Ooze, but there was no connection between them and the movie character.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is one of the most nostalgic releases of the franchise, having found most of its success throughout the years thanks to VHS and DVDs after a not-so-special theatrical run. Even though there have been 30 Power Rangers seasons and dozens of different teams, the show is still synonymous with Mighty Morphin. Power Rangers: The Movie may not be canon, but it encapsulates everything good about the show’s original run. With a bigger budget compared to the series, Power Rangers: The Movie was everything viewers were used to but enhanced.

The Power Rangers costumes had never looked better than in the 1995 movie, which kept the Zyuranger designs but replaced the spandex suits with armor. An argument can be made that the 1995 Power Rangers suits are what the Rangers’ costumes should look like in a potential reboot that tries to move away from the traditional Sentai costumes. Compared to Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, which felt like an extended TV pilot for Power Rangers Turbo, the first Power Rangers film was by far the better one regardless of its non-canon status.
