Warning: contains spoilers for Vengeance of the Moon Knight #4!Moon Knight’s death has reverberated through the Marvel Universe, and could potentially lead to the death of one of Marvel’s oldest line of heroes. Marc Spector was tragically killed in the pages of Moon Knight late last year. While a new Moon Knight has since arisen, Hunter’s Moon, another Fist of Khonshu, has his reservations. In Vengeance of the Moon Knight #4, he explains why.

In Vengeance of the Moon Knight #4, written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio, Hunter’s Moon is talking with Doctor Sterman, Moon Knight’s former therapist. Doctor Sterman tries to dig deep into Hunter’s psyche and why he is so upset with the new Moon Knight. Hunter’s Moon tells her that this new Moon Knight is not a Fist of Khonshu, but an impostor.

Hunter’s Moon then goes on to explain that, as the last Fist, if anything happens to him, the line will die out completely.

The Fists of Khonshu Have a Long Legacy in the Marvel Universe

Moon Knight's Death Has Thrown Their Future Into Doubt

The Fists of Khonshu are one of the oldest organizations in the Marvel Universe, tracing their roots back to Earth’s prehistoric age. Although Khonshu is associated with Egyptian mythology, the character is actually timeless, and his Fists carry out his will in every era. Charged with protecting travelers at night, the Fists of Khonshu dispense brutal justice to vampires and other nocturnal dwellers. Marc Spector is perhaps the best known Fist of Khonshu, but MacKay and Cappuccio recently unveiled Hunter’s Moon. Hunter’s Moon believes Moon Knight has strayed from Khonshu, and seeks to guide him back to the fold.

Yet now, Hunter’s Moon finds himself the sole remaining Fist, and he fears the worst. Hunter’s Moon is far more devoted to Khonshu than Marc was, which may explain why he fears the lineage dying of the Fists dying as much as he does. Hunter’s Moon may also fear that Marc died an apostate. After Khonshu tricks Moon Knight into stealing the Avengers’ powers, he rejects his patron deity. Seeking to carve out his own destiny, Moon Knight created the Midnight Mission. The Midnight Mission carries out Khonshu’s original mandate–to protect travelers at night.

Moon Knight Was the Most Important Fist of Khonshu

The Organization Will Not Die With Him

The Fists of Khonshu have a proud legacy in the Marvel Universe, but now it is in danger. Hunter’s Moon is something of a zealot for Khonshu, despite the toll it is taking on him. He fears that the organization that has given his life so much meaning will crumble to nothingness. It is telling that he feels this way in the wake of Moon Knight’s death. It shows how crucial Marc Spector was to the Fists of Khonshu, that his passing threatens their very existence. While Moon Knight will inevitably return, the Fists of Khonshu may not.
