Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Scarlet Witch (2024) #3!

Marvel’s Scarlet Witch will face her most personal threat yet, going up against an evil variant of herself. A demonic version of Wanda Maximoff named Lore debuted in 1994, and is set to make a grand return to Marvel Comics in the imminent Scarlet Witch series. The multiversal villain was a primary antagonist in Scarlet Witch’s very first solo series, and is now set to terrorize her all-new run.

Marvel has revealed Russell Dauterman's redesign of Lore for the upcoming Scarlet Witch (2024) #3. The villain’s redesign is a stark change for the evil Wanda Maximoff variant, somewhat reminiscent of the MCU’s version of the character, with an updated costume and fiery red hair.

In addition to the costume and hair change, Dauterman’s redesign gives the character a gothic undead look that fits with the character’s status as a necromancer. With the power to raise the dead, Lore comes back to life herself after 30 years to face off against her Earth-616 counterpart.

Evil 1990s Scarlet Witch Variant LORE Makes A Comeback

Scarlet Witch #3 – By Steve Orlando, Russell Dauterman, & Jacopo Camagni.

Though there have been many variants of Scarlet Witch over the years, Lore is perhaps the most sinister of them all.

Lore debuted in Scarlet Witch’s first solo series, and is resurrected in her latest to shake the hero to her core. An evil variant of Wanda Maximoff from Earth-TRN955, Lore is a fellow nexus being, who uses her powers of necromancy and sorcery to feed on the energy of other universes. First seen in 1994's Scarlet Witch #1– by Andy Lanning, Dan Abnett, John Higgins, and Mark McKenna – Lore appeared to Wanda in a dreamlike vision, destroying another world before she set her sights on the mainstream Marvel Universe. The four-issue run put Wanda to the test against her most villainous form.

Though there have been many variants of Scarlet Witch over the years, Lore is perhaps the most sinister of them all. Wanda called Lore out as a genocidal monster, for destroying countless worlds and killing their inhabitants, before finally defeating her in Scarlet Witch #4. As Lore returns in Wanda’s 2024 series, the Scarlet Witch will have to face the fear of her own dark side as she goes up against the villain. This wicked counterpart holds a mirror to Wanda’s own insecurities as a hero, and could break new emotional ground for the character.

After 30 years, the necromancer Lore will return from the dead with a vengeance, following her brutal defeat by Wanda in 1994.

Scarlet Witch's Solo Series Spins Out Of Her Current Twin Team-Up

The More Things Change...

As Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver series comes to a close, his brand-new Scarlet Witch series is set to debut just one month later. The twin team-up series has taken some inspiration from the MCU, adding Wandavision character Darcy Lewis to Earth-616 as part of Wanda’s latest comic adventures, in a bit of cross-media synergy. Wanda and Pietro have faced adversity in their run, but it's still yet to be determined how they will be separated, and what will come of Quicksilver as the Scarlet Witch goes solo and battles her ultra-powerful evil variant.

After 30 years, the necromancer Lore will return from the dead with a vengeance, following her brutal defeat by Wanda in 1994. Though Wanda had the West Coast Avengers and Agatha Harkness by her side during their first battle, it seems that she could be all alone in her next fight with her sinister variant. Since there aren’t many heroes or villains that can match Wanda Maximoff’s power in Marvel Comics, Lore’s evil version of the character has the potential to be Scarlet Witch’s new arch-nemesis.

Scarlet Witch #3 will be available August 21, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
