Love blooms in unlikely places as Henry and Martha's story unfolds, adding depth to their characters in Spy x Family.

Spy x Family has no shortage of wonderful, hilarious main characters with surprisingly deep, tragic origin stories, but Henry Henderson was previously not truly explored. Despite having the most elegant personality in the series by a country mile, Henry is a fan-favorite, and it's easy to see why, with him eternally protecting the interests of his students.

However, as Henry's origins are explored in Spy x Family, it turns out some of his most iconic mannerisms, and even his catchphrase, are the effect of meeting Martha Marriott when they were both kids. Martha is Becky Blackbell's caretaker in Spy x Family, but her story beyond that is also largely a mystery like Henry's.

Looking back, with their humble demeanor and perfect etiquette, it makes sense that they could get along, but the truth is far deeper and more romantic than that. The latest developments in the Term Finals Arc of Spy x Family have possibly the most elegant origin story yet.

Henry Henderson's Origins in Spy x Family Include Love at First Sight

Martha Marriott's Charm Wins Over the Stuffy Young Henry

First alluded to in Spy x Family Chapter #96, Henry Henderson has an old former flame in Martha Marriott, shown as he asks her to join him in the school dance. Played off initially by Henry as a meeting of two old friends, his memories say otherwise, as he is immediately entranced by her when she performs ballet at the Cecile Hall New Year's talent show. As the years go by in this flashback, Henry goes from his first year of high school at Eden Academy, to his last year, where the two grow remarkably close until he graduates.

Henry has a tough time in high school, losing many of his friends after earning the nickname "Mr. Elegant" while stubbornly upholding what his father, an educator, taught him: to be a gentleman. Henry's origin story in Spy x Family shows him as an intelligent student hounded by bullies, avoiding fighting back, citing the Tonitrus Bolts as punishment. If not for Martha's intervention, he'd be content trying to lecture his way to victory. As the two bond further, regularly sharing tea as days pass, Henry tries to ask Martha to his Graduation Party Dance, but she quietly declines.

Love Blooms in Many Shapes and Sizes, Even if Neither Party Realizes

The reason Henry had a hard time at school largely stems from his outburst when he first saw Martha performing her ballet, shouting out, "How elegant!" This is the first time Henry Henderson said elegant in Spy x Family. But after Martha's rejection, Henry graduates with the sole intent of becoming a teacher, feeling that education breeds character, so he can prevent violence on his own terms. He pursues his ideals, but the origin story of this hilarious Spy x Family character is seemingly interrupted.

As the years continue to pass, Martha is shown then in her final year of high school, where she learns there's an assembly to greet new faculty. Martha is shocked by Henry's return, being brought to Eden to teach History, now focused as an educator. It shines with the potential for the two to reconcile, but the suddenly rising tides of war undercut this reunion as it sweeps Ostania, as well as Martha and Henry, into the chaos. But with the upcoming release of Spy x Family Chapter #98, perhaps this isn't the end of Henry's origin story yet.
