New FIREFLY Comic Finally Answers the Show's Biggest Question, But Fans May Not Like It

Summary The upcoming Firefly: Verses one-shot comic from Boom! Studios explores what might have happened if the Browncoats had won the war rather than the Alliance, in a story that is set to challenge fans' views on morality and power in the Firefly galaxy.

Author Ryan Parrott's take on an alternate Firefly timeline will test familiar characters' ideals, as they go from underdog freedom fighters to the ones wielding political power.

Art by Lalit Kumar Sharma – who has worked on several previous Firefly comics – will help keep the franchise's characters visually familiar, even as their character arcs could take dark, unexpected trajectories in the one-shot.

One of Firefly's biggest "What if?" questions finally be explored – but fans may not like the answer once they get it. At the center of the original TV show, the combined government forces of The Alliance overtake the Browncoats, the rebellious outlaws who were overwhelmed in the Unification War. The latest Firefly comic from Boom! Studios will explore how things could have turned out very differently.

According to Boom! Studios' press release, the upcoming Firefly: Verses one-shot – by Ryan Parrott and Lalit Kumar Sharma – will recontextualize Firefly fans' understanding of the Browncoat faction, but offering a glimpse at the galaxy if they had emerged victorious.

This impending return to the Firefly teases that it could completely change how audiences view the Browncoats from the cult-favorite one-season television show, by showcasing how consistent their morality remains in a world where they are on the winning side of the war.

In a world where the Browncoats are the winners, it is likely that fans can expect to find their ideals tested by the nature of political power.

This alternate take on the Firefly timeline is precipitated by the question of what the aftermath of Brownshirt victory would have been. According to writer Ryan Parrott:

I'm huge fan of ‘What if…’ stories and of the ‘Firefly’ franchise as a whole, so getting the opportunity to explore how the crew of the Serenity might have turned out if the Browncoats had won the war… well, that’s just too good of a story not to tell.

As the author who penned beautifully complicated tales in Boom!'s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ongoing – turning the iconic 1990s TV series into a sprawling intergalactic epic – it should catch readers' attention, and drive up their anticipation for the new series, when he calls Firefly: Verses "one of the most exciting and complex stories" of his career.

Artist Lalit Kumar Sharma – who previously did work on Greg Pak's Firefly and Firefly: New Sheriff in the 'Verse – likened drawing another Firefly series as a homecoming of sorts, stating:

“Telling another story for Firefly feels like home again, but this time, it’s a different home! The new browncoat is sleek and expensive, but just maybe it’s a little too heavy to wear for a long time.”

This seems to suggest that in a world where the Browncoats are the winners, it is likely that fans can expect to find their ideals tested by the nature of political power. Consequently, more than just a fun, throwaway "What if?" plot, Firefly: Verses could radically shift how audiences understand the franchise.

Firefly: Verses could paint its protagonists as completely different from the characters fans recognize; perhaps the most frightful possibility of all, Firefly's heroes could become exactly what they fought against.

What Could Have Been

Firefly main characters Mal and Zoe will be the central figures of this Firefly one-shot, as they grace the cover art released by Boom! in sleek Browncoat uniforms. Anti-establishment no more – they have become the establishment. Readers can only speculate if the new power and position could drastically change their attitudes. Team Serenity were never the most righteous of rogues, but they still lived by their code, albeit an anti-heroic one. Firefly: Verses could paint its protagonists as completely different from the characters fans recognize; perhaps the most frightful possibility of all, Firefly's heroes could become exactly what they fought against.
