Rayner is a Kellerun, a species first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) has made a point to learn about Kelleruns to connect with the USS Discovery's new First Officer. Along with boiling their cakes, Kelleruns like to indulge in a concoction called citrus mash.
