Timothy Olyphant Addresses Rumored Justified Feud With Walton Goggins
Summary Olyphant addresses stories of tension with Goggins on the Justified set, admitting creative clashes.
Justified: City Primeval season 2 may happen, with a potential Givens vs. Crowder showdown.
Olyphant seems to bear no ill-will toward Goggins, and is ready to clash on screen again.
Timothy Olyphant addresses comments made by Justified co-star Walton Goggins about the two being at odds in real life. Olyphant and Goggins became fictional adversaries on FX’s acclaimed crime series, which starred the former as lawman Raylan Givens, and the latter as criminal mastermind Boyd Crowder. But recent remarks from Goggins about his working relationship with Olyphant suggested their rivalry spilled over into real life, as Goggins revealed tensions between the two actors on the Justified set.
Olyphant has now given his side of the story about the tension between himself and Goggins, addressing his fellow Justified cast member's remarks, and admitting that the two did clash over creative differences, but saying he still wants to work with Goggins again. Check out his remarks below (via Vanity Fair):
Okay, here’s my version. I adored working with Walt from the jump, but these actors, they’re a pain in the a--. They get really into their work! There was this thing where, as the show went on, and especially as the thing came to an end, where I would come from the writers’ room. They’d add things that were like, “Here’s what we need Walt to do in order to get to this finale we want.” Then Walt would say his character would never do that, and then I’d be like, “God---mn it.” We’d get really frustrated with each other. I also think looking back, people have a hard time saying goodbye. Every time I’m on the end of any shoot, the longer the shoot, the more you feel it. Everybody starts acting funny. Summer camp comes to an end. I’d love to say that I’m immune to that, but I’m not. I’m always aware that for everybody, it’s difficult to leave. Some people make it easier to walk away, whatever it is. I’ve always adored that guy and I love working with him, and he’s something special. It was fun to see him in this new job [Fallout]. I know he had a ball doing it. I’d work with him again in a heartbeat. And I’m assuming if we do it again, he’ll be more predisposed to listen to me.
Will Olyphant And Goggins Meet Again In Justified: City Primeval Season 2
The sequel show Justified: City Primeval was released in 2023, eight years after season 6 seemed to wrap up the series. In addition to bringing back Olyphant as Givens, the show also caught up with Goggins’ Crowder. The show ended with a surprise twist, as Crowder escaped from prison, a turn of events that caused a presumably retiring Givens to reverse course on his plan to finally hang it up.
With a seeming showdown between Givens and Crowder now set up, it seems inevitable that Justified: City Primeval season 2 will happen. Nothing has been confirmed, but Olyphant and Goggins both seem game to continue, going by their recent remarks. Olyphant indeed seems to harbor no ill will toward Goggins after their contentious time together on Justified, and is ready to clash with his TV adversary again.
Justified is available to watch on Hulu.
Givens and Crowder throwing down one last time would be the perfect way to bring Justified to an end. While it was fun seeing Givens back again in City Primeval, something was missing with Crowder being mostly out of the picture. The process might not always be smooth when Olyphant and Goggins share the screen, but the result is almost always compelling.
