10 Funniest Peanuts Strips About Food

10 Funniest Peanuts Strips About Food

Summary Dyring its fifty years in publication. Charles Schulz' Peanuts comic had numerous food-centric strips, featuring major foodie Snoopy and the rest of the gang's culinary quirks and preferences.

Eating is a universal human experience, and audiences love jokes about food, making Peanuts' culinary humor part of its unforgettable and iconic tapestry of relatable, kindhearted humor.

Snoopy's love for root beer and Woodstock's obsession with grape jelly are two examples of Peanuts' food humor, one of the best recurring elements in the strip's long run.

Peanuts offered slice of life tales of its young protagonists, including many relatable comics about food. With a character who is as major a foodie as Snoopy – and a cast of kids with hearty appetites – there were, of course, numerous food centered Peanuts strips. From junk food to dog food, Peanuts covered all the culinary bases during its run in syndication.

While other comics have covered food in their works, Peanuts approached everything with its trademark outlook, as its iconic cast of characters offered a taste of hilarity with a variety of food-focused jokes. Time and again, every member of the Peanuts gang – from Charlie Brown, to Lucy, to Woodstock – made their culinary preferences clear.

Eating is one of the most universal aspects of the human experience, meaning audiences will always have a particular affinity for jokes about food. By extension, some of Peanuts' food humor ranks among the most memorable installments of Charles Schulz' comic strip.

10 "Don't Interfere With My Food-Life!"

First Published: 1961

Snoopy definitely does not take kindly to his "food-life" being mentioned, as he appears ready to fight a little girl if she keeps pushing the issue of limiting his food.

Snoopy is not a particularly serious dog; rather, he is able to see things with a sense of humor most of the time. However, he does take one thing very seriously: his food. He loves to eat, so someone suggesting that his food intake be decreased is the last thing he wants to hear. Based on this comic, he even prefers some forms of maltreatment over his food being interfered with, showing his complete lack of patience for anything that could restrict or dampen his "food-life."

Snoopy has never hesitated at confrontation, whether it's with Charlie Brown on the baseball field, or with Lucy after she insults him. Likewise, Snoopy definitely does not take kindly to his "food-life" being mentioned, as he appears ready to fight a little girl if she keeps pushing the issue of limiting his food.

9 "Send Out For A Pizza"

First Published: 1980

Despite the humor of her suggestion, it also shows her big heart

Sports and loyalty are among Peppermint Patty's strong suits. School, on the other hand, is a very different story. A running gag in Peanuts finds Peppermint Patty struggling to come up with the correct answer, and often any answer at all, when she is called on in class. Here, she comes up with a unique, though not super realistic solution, in this comic.

Hoping that the question is dropped, Peppermint Patty suggests calling in for a pizza instead of trying to solve the pesky problem. She can try as hard as she can, but it does not look likely that a slice of pepperoni pizza will help her out in this situation. Despite the humor of her suggestion, it also shows her big heart, that she is trying to speak up for the rest of her classmates who also don't know the answer.

8 "It's So Hard To Find Good Help These Days"

First Published: 1975

Exhibiting some diva behavior, the beagle cares more about his root beer being damaged than poor Linus. However, as much as Snoopy loves root beer, his care for the soft drink over his own friend is not all that shocking.

Next to chocolate chip cookies and pizza, root beer is in the top three of Snoopy's favorite foods. That love of the classic soda apparently runs in the family, since Snoopy's brother, Spike, is also a fan of root beer. When Linus, being the helpful, kind little guy that he is, offers to carry a huge package of root beer cans into Snoopy's physics-defining doghouse, he falls down the stairs, creating quite the clatter with the root beer cans.

Rather than be concerned about Linus or ask if he is alright, Snoopy instead decides to take the moment to make a comment about how hard it is to find good help. Exhibiting some diva behavior, the beagle cares more about his root beer being damaged than poor Linus. However, as much as Snoopy loves root beer, his care for the soft drink over his own friend is not all that shocking.

Snoopy is almost never depicted actually going into his doghouse, because he is prone to claustrophobia.

7 "Wet, Sticky, Ol' Popcorn"

First Published: 1953

Lucy can at best be called bossy and, at worst, called an absolute headache of a child. Charlie Brown is well aware of Lucy's annoying qualities, usually having a front row seat to them. When Lucy comprehensively berates Charlie Brown for sticking his hand back in the popcorn bowl after he has licked his fingers, the reader sees Charlie Brown has flipped the popcorn bowl to sit atop Lucy's head.

While Lucy does make a good point about popcorn eating hygiene and etiquette (licking fingers and putting them back in the snack bowl is pretty disgusting for the other person), she engages in overkill, harping on it way longer than needed. As a result, Charlie Brown loses his cool and leaves his pal covered in the wet, sticky popcorn pieces that she detested so much in the first place.

6 "Grape Jelly With Grape Jelly On It"

First Published: 1978

It's possible grape jelly is Woodstock's version of Popeye's spinach. In any case, it makes sense that someone as sweet-natured as Woodstock would be crazy about a sugary food like grape jelly.

Like most birds, Woodstock enjoys eating worms. Not surprising, right? What would be off the beaten path is that Woodstock loves to eat grape jelly. It is no ordinary love either. He eats grape jelly on top of grape jelly. That's a lot of grape jelly for one tiny bird to ingest. Likewise, his best pal Snoopy is also taken aback at just how much Woodstock loves the classic fruit spread.

Snoopy has a lot of quirks too, so it takes a lot from him to be perplexed at something. Although, maybe Woodstock knows something everyone else doesn't about grape jelly, given he has incredible strength and endurance at times. It's possible grape jelly is Woodstock's version of Popeye's spinach. In any case, it makes sense that someone as sweet-natured as Woodstock would be crazy about a sugary food like grape jelly.

5 "A Bowl Of Marshmallows Makes A Lousy Supper!"

Published In 1960

Linus has his own very unique way of looking at the world. Sometimes his singular perspective can make him wise and give some sage advice, while other times it results in misplaced efforts, as this comic evidences. When Charlie Brown is unable to give Snoopy his dinner, Linus steps in and feeds the hungry pup himself.

Unfortunately for Snoopy, his dinner is a dog bowl full of marshmallows; a delicious dinner, but not the most nutritious or satisfying, which Snoopy points out. Linus may be mature for his age at times, but him giving a dog a dinner of marshmallows is pure kid logic. Only an eight year old would think that marshmallows are a solid dinner choice for a dog. However, Snoopy is a resourceful dog, so he'll figure out some sort of palatable dinner elsewhere.

Linus was a design inspiration for the character Calvin of the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.

4 "You'll Have To Fix Your Own Supper"

First Published: 1979

The fact that Snoopy has led a group of birds in his own Beagle Scouts, and has concocted a series of alter egos, makes clear that he is more than capable of making his own dinner for one night, despite his nerves and anxieties.

While not food of the people variety, dog food is of importance in this comic. When Charlie Brown does not have the time to make Snoopy's dinner himself, the beagle must make it himself. Snoopy, who gives Garfield a run for his money in terms of laziness, is overwhelmed by having to make his own food, despite being handed everything necessary to make it.

So accustomed to having Charlie Brown, or others, make his food, Snoopy is at a loss the moment the box of supplies is handed to him. While Snoopy may be uneasy about having to make his own food, at least Charlie Brown didn't send Linus to feed him a bowl of marshmallows again. The fact that Snoopy has led a group of birds in his own Beagle Scouts, and has concocted a series of alter egos, makes clear that he is more than capable of making his own dinner for one night, despite his nerves and anxieties.

3 "Eating Toast Is Like Getting Away For The Weekend"

First Published: 1991

Lucy and Linus have their squabbles, many of which stem from Linus getting on Lucy's last nerve from one of his many quirks. When Lucy calls out for Linus only to be ignored by him, he explains that it's because he is eating toast, which basically shuts out the world around him, because all he can hear is the echo from chewing.

It's a rare sight to see someone compare eating toast to getting away for the weekend, but there's something for everyone. While toast can come in handy when one is queasy or as a nice breakfast carb, it is not exactly a food item that most people go crazy over. However, as Peanuts fans know, Linus is not like most people. Lucy, understandably, just walks away from Linus's revelation. Ironically, the perennially crabby Lucy would benefit from methods of relaxation, even if it is eating toast.

2 "One Of The Great Joys In Life Is Scarfing Junk Food"

First Published: 1975

Very much a proponent of doing what makes one happy, Snoopy has never been one to shy away from what he loves, even if it is not the best for him.

For some, the great joys in life can be being immersed in nature or spending time with friends and family. However, for Snoopy, one of his great joys in life is chowing down on caloric, tasty junk food. As the comic suggests, Snoopy has seen the data that junk food is bad for health, yet he gets so much pleasure from his junk food eating that he does not care.

Very much a proponent of doing what makes one happy, Snoopy has never been one to shy away from what he loves, even if it is not the best for him. People who have as much passion and zest for life as Snoopy does, tend to live for today, not the future, allowing the beagle to eat his junk food with wild abandon.

1 "Chocolate Chip Cookies Follow Me Wherever I Go"

First Published: 1986

Arguably Snoopy's favorite food and an obsession of his that stays on his mind, chocolate chip cookies are Snoopy's reason for living. The quintessential sweet treat has awoken Snoopy from a deep sleep in the past and has left him heartbroken when the last cookie has been eaten by Charlie Brown, showing the importance that chocolate chip cookies have played in his life.

With a love so deep for the cookies that he attributes supernatural qualities to them, Snoopy claims that the baked goods follow him wherever he goes, literally. Snoopy has a myriad of interests, from tennis to pretending to be a World War I era fighter pilot. However, all those other passions fall by the wayside when it comes to his beloved chocolate chip cookies. He even once said to Charlie Brown, "You'll never convince me that there's more to life than chocolate chip cookies," which says it all.
