American Idol’s Emmy Russell Shares Cryptic Instagram Message About “Cruelty” & “Manipulation”

Summary American Idol season 22 Top 5 finalist Emmy Russell shared a cryptic Instagram message.

Emmy has received a lot of online hate.

Emmy deserves her spot in the American Idol season 22 Top 5.

American Idol season 22 Top 5 finalist Emmy Russell shared a cryptic Instagram story with a quotation that seemed to refer to the critiques that she's received. Emmy is the late country music legend Loretta Lynn's granddaughter. She impressed the American Idol season 22 judges--Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan--with her original song, "skinny," at her audition, even though she was very timid. Since then, Emmy has grown a lot, but many were shocked that she moved on to the Top 5 after she sat at the piano and sang a ballad version of "SHUT UP + DANCE" by Walk the Moon during "Songs That Make Me Wanna Dance" Night.

"Honesty without kindness is cruelty. Kindness without honesty is manipulation."

In an Instagram story, which was captured by Reddit user nameblanc, Emmy shared a quotation from Dr. Caroline Leaf which read, "Honesty without kindness is cruelty. Kindness without honesty is manipulation."

Although Emmy didn't include an explanation with the quotation, it's possible that she was referring to some of the cruel online comments from American Idol fans, who've said that Emmy doesn't deserve to be in the Top 5, and she only got there because of her grandmother. The second part of the quotation might refer to the judges, who are always very kind to the contestants, even when they deserve harsher criticism.

Emmy has been the recipient of a lot of online hate, but it most certainly isn't warranted. While fans of eliminated contestants, including Julia Gagnon, McKenna Faith Breinholt, and others believe that their favorites deserved to continue in the competition instead of Emmy, there's no excuse for them to be so hateful toward Emmy. Julia has even spoken out against the online hate that has plagued the season. Lionel, Katy, and Luke seem to believe that Emmy deserves to be in the Top 5, as they have consistently praised her for her growth throughout American Idol season 22.

Emmy might not be a powerhouse singer, but she's fantastic at what she does, which is performing country music and writing original songs. She has sung three of her moving and emotional original songs during American Idol season 22 so far, including "skinny," "Like That," and "Want You." In addition, Emmy has infused her own style into songs such as "Lose You to Love Me" by Selena Gomez, "All the Small Things" by blink-182, and "Water Under the Bridge" by Adele. Emmy has the potential to be a big country star, and history has shown that that's exactly what American Idol fans want.

It's sad that social media has given hateful fans a platform to share their harsh criticism of American Idol season 22 contestants. While it's fine to have an opinion about the finalists, it's never okay to personally insult or attack people. Emmy is a talented singer and songwriter, and, if her American Idol season 22 fans are voting for her to win the competition, then she absolutely deserves it. Hopefully, Emmy will be able to enjoy her time in the Top 5 during Disney Night, and possibly move on to the Top 3 to perform for America's votes in the finale. Emmy has an excellent chance of becoming the next American Idol.

American Idol season 22 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
