She had always dreamed of being a mother and knew she couldn't get pregnant at her size. Wanting to have a healthy pregnancy, Amy had bariatric surgery and lost 125 pounds. Despite her doctor warning her not to get pregnant too soon after surgery, she went on to have two children with her now ex-husband, Michael Halterman.

Despite dropping weight and making her dreams of motherhood come true, Amy's incredible weight-loss journey hasn't been without its ups and downs. When 1000-lb Sisters premiered, Amy and Michael Halterman were newlyweds, and Amy decided to lose weight so she could have children. After four years of marriage, Michael filed for divorce from Amy. The couple's separation came as a big surprise because Michael had been a constant presence on 1000-lb Sisters. He was always by Amy's side and was a big help to Tammy. When they went anywhere together, it was Michael pushing Tammy's wheelchair. The couple always seemed happy, but things changed soon after their two sons, Gage and Glenn Halterman, were born.

Amy and Michael's problems were revealed during 1000-lb Sisters season 5, and Michael filed for divorce from Amy in March 2023.

During an episode of 1000-lb Sisters season 5, an exhausted Amy broke down in tears as she explained to her sisters, Tammy Slaton and Amanda Halterman, that her marriage was over. "I used to be the glue that holds our family together, but now I'm just the used piece of gum," Amy tearfully told her sisters. She added, "Someone done stuck me on the bottom of a dirty ass shoe."

It was upsetting for Tammy and Amanda to hear Amy talk that way about herself. After losing so much weight, and being such a loving mother to her sons, Amy's family rightfully believes Amy deserves to feel good about herself.

In October 2023, Amy turned 36 years old and posted a TikTok of herself on the big day. In contrast to the video's celebratory filters that include balloons and a festive birthday hat, Amy is crying and singing "It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to." Amy doesn't specify the reason for her birthday tears. It's possible she was sad because this was her first birthday since divorcing Michael.

Amy has openly talked about struggling with her mental health. Since her divorce, Amy has entered into therapy and was diagnosed with depression, acute stress, and bipolar. The 1000-lb Sisters star is committed to managing her mental health by continuing to attend therapy while taking her medications.

Tammy, Amy, and Chris have all undergone the surgery, so they understand how dangerous the procedure can be. 1000-lb Sisters season 5 features a scene where Slaton sisters Misty Slaton Wentworth and Amanda Halterman make a big announcement to Amy, Tammy, and their brother, Chris Combs, about wanting to undergo weight-loss surgery. “Me and Misty’s been going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda told her siblings. Dr. Eric Smith is the bariatric surgeon who treated both Tammy and Chris. All the Slaton weighed in with their fears about the procedure, which could include complications and even death., so they understand how dangerous the procedure can be.

It's unclear if this will be Misty's first bariatric surgery, but it's known Amanda had already had the surgery once before, in 2014.

It's not uncommon for some people to get the surgery twice, but revision weight-loss surgery has a higher risk of complications than the first round. During the gripping 1000-lb Sisters scene, Amy got emotional as she openly feared for Misty and Amanda’s lives. “Hearing Amanda and Misty get worked up about the surgery and them not making it out, it’s scary,” Amy said, adding, “One slip and, oop, Amanda’s gone, or, oop, Misty’s gone. I need my sisters.”

Amy isn't the only hot-headed member of the Slaton family. Her sister and fellow 1000-lb Sisters star, Tammy, is also known for being passionate and emotional. Like Amy, Tammy lost a significant amount of weight over the years. When she made her television debut in 2020, Tammy weighed 680 pounds. Despite trying to diet, she seemed to gain more weight. By season 3, Tammy weighed 720 pounds. After a health crisis landed her in a medically-induced coma, she finally decided to focus on losing weight. After having bariatric surgery, Tammy lost 440 pounds.

Other members of the Slaton family have gotten in on the weight-loss action over the years.

Chris had bariatric surgery during 1000-lb Sisters season 3. He has lost over 150 pounds and is determined to have skin removal surgery as soon as possible. As for Misty and Amanda, they ended up having bariatric surgery on the same day, in March 2023, and with the same doctor. Though it's unclear how much weight they've lost so far, they both look dramatically thinner recently. 1000-lb Sisters season 6 will likely continue to follow all the hot-headed Slatons as they pursue their health goals.
