Switch 2 Confirmed To Be Avoiding A Huge Mistake Nintendo Repeated For 10 Years

Summary New Nintendo console will use Nintendo Account system for player convenience across hardware generations.

Prior Nintendo consoles lacked in carrying purchases and accounts across devices, but this will change.

Possibility of new console having backwards compatibility for Switch games, with potential next-gen enhancements.

Recent reports from Nintendo have confirmed that the company is avoiding a major mistake it has made with previous console generations as it prepares to reveal its successor to the Nintendo Switch. After years of speculation, the President of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed that the new console - which has been referred to as the "Switch 2" by the gaming community but will likely have a different name based on Nintendo's past devices - would be revealed later this year, and since then, has answered questions about what features players can expect during an investor Q&A.

As translated by OatmealDome on X, Furukawa was asked a question regarding the Switch successor's online functionality, and specifically, whether it would be using the Nintendo Account system implemented in 2016, shortly before the release of the Nintendo Switch.

Furukawa responded that this system was established with the intent of supporting long-term relationships between Nintendo and its customers across hardware generations, and would be used for the upcoming console, which is a departure from how various accounts and purchases worked across previous Nintendo devices.

Previous Nintendo Consoles Didn't Carry Across Purchases Or Accounts

Nintendo First Introduced Major Online Features Almost A Decade Ago

While the Nintendo GameCube did have eight games with internet or local area network (LAN) support, Nintendo never commissioned any servers or internet services to interface with the console, but allowed other publishers to do so and made them responsible for managing the online experiences for their games, which was a departure from what the competing Xbox and PlayStation 2 consoles were doing at the time, with Xbox Live and PlayStation's NetPlay functionality. This approach changed significantly with the release of the Nintendo 3DS in 2004 and the Wii in 2006, as online multiplayer began becoming more of a regular feature, and digital storefronts were introduced for game and DLC purchases.

Unfortunately, any purchases or accounts set up on one console didn't carry across to the other, and this continued with the later releases of the Nintendo 3DS and WiiU consoles. Prior to the introduction of the Nintendo Account system, Nintendo's president at the time, Satoru Iwata, declared that it would "create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses." as it encompassed the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, smartphones, tablets, and the Nintendo Switch that released later in 2017.

As of May 20th, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service was discontinued, making it no longer possible to use online features of Nintendo DS/DSi and Wii software, such as online play, matchmaking, competitions, and leaderboards. Almost a decade later, on April 8, 2024, online functionality was also discontinued for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software, including software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS consoles.

Nintendo's Approach To Long-Term Customer Relationships Bodes Well For Backwards Compatibility

Rumors Have Stated That The New Console Will Carry Across The Switch's Library

Hopefully, Nintendo continuing to use the Nintendo Account system bodes well for the rumors that the new console will have backwards compatibility. These reports have floated around since February 2024 and claim that the new hardware would be able to play both physical and digital Switch games. They also state that while the entire Switch library will be carried across, there will also be "next-gen" enhancements available for specific titles, should the developer update the game for the newer system, something that has become more common with titles being carried over from the PS4 and Xbox One era of consoles into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S generation.

If so, it should be an extremely smooth transition from the Nintendo Switch with the Nintendo Accounts system in place, as players should be able to log in on the new system and find all of their purchases and account details intact, essentially picking up where they left off, much like the experience on recent PlayStation and Xbox consoles when they moved to their next-gen devices. Hopefully, players will be able to learn more about Nintendo's next-gen console and its specific features soon, as while Furukawa stated it wouldn't be present at the upcoming June Direct showcase, it will be revealed in this fiscal year.
