There are mentions of free characters offered in Honkai: Star Rail 2.3 in new leaks about the upcoming patch. The popular turn-based space RPG is currently in the first stages of Version 2.2. This is an important patch for the title, as it introduces the final missions in the main Penacony storyline and sets the Nameless’ goals toward their next destination – even if that will only happen a while from now. Version 2.2 is also the patch introducing the playable versions of Robin and Boothill in Honkai: Star Rail, giving players a chance to obtain them through their banners.

With the addition of the last main missions related to Penacony, the game should start slowing down when it comes to main narrative content, though it should remain at full speed moving forward with new character releases, side stories, events, and more. It just so happens that the following patch, Version 2.3, is already in the sights of leakers and a load of its content is already being shared. This includes, for instance, a new game-breaking ability in Honkai: Star Rail 2.3, as well as rumors of a roster of free characters that players will be able to choose from.

Version 2.3 is allegedly offering players a free 4-star character as part of an upcoming event added with the patch. Information obtained by the leaker known as Firefly Lover and shared in a post tagged as “Reliable” on Reddit details the rumors. According to the leak provided, this will be a 4-star character giveaway and players will be able to choose one out of four different characters. This is not the first time developer HoYoverse gives out free characters – there was a free character reward in Honkai: Star Rail 2.1, and the 5-star Dr. Ratio giveaway until Version 2.1.

Options Range From DPS Units To Supports

All the 4-star units are listed in Firefly Lover’s leak. The first character mentioned in the leak is Gallagher. This 4-star Fire character follows the Path of the Abundance and, therefore, operates as a healer in team comps. Gallagher is a fairly aggressive healer, not only contributing to the team’s damage output himself, but instigating his allies to attack opponents and, only by doing so, receive continuous healing from his end. Alongside Archeron and Aventurine, Gallagher is one of the new characters in Honkai: Star Rail 2.1 – though he can be obtained from any banner since his debut.

The second character mentioned in the Version 2.3 leak is Hanya. This is also a 4-star character who uses Physical DMG in battles and follows the Path of the Harmony. As a follower of that Path, Hanya is a support unit who aids her teammates with buffs.

Different from several other characters in that same category, Hanya significantly helps with Skill Point restoration and is of immense value in expensive teams, like those that feature Dan Heng: Imbibitor Lunae in Honkai: Star Rail. Hanya also provides more damage output for her team, making her a fully-fledged support character.

Hanya’s buff to damage output comes in the form of a debuff applied on her enemies, the same that restores Skill Points after every two hits they receive.

Luka is the third character mentioned in Firefly Lover’s leak. Like Hanya, Luka deals Physical DMG in battles, though in a different manner. Luka follows the Path of the Nihility, making him a specialist in debuffing opponents.

In fact, Luka is known for inflicting the Bleed debuff on enemies, which works as a DoT (damage over time) effect, in addition to increasing the damage the Bleeding opponent receives. Luka is a great contender for a member in Acheron’s team comp in Honkai: Star Rail, as he is not only a Nihility character, but one that contributes to her damage output.

The fourth and final free 4-star character mentioned in the leak is Arlan. This is a Lightning DPS character who follows the Path of the Destruction. In combat, Arlan sacrifices a portion of his HP to increase his overall damage output, making him a traditional HP-loss character, much like Blade, but to a more contained degree.

Despite his HP-loss mechanic, Arlan mitigates that consumption with several passive Skills and Eidolon levels that can make him less reliant on healing and more present during battles. Arlan has been available since the release of Honkai: Star Rail back in Version 1.0.

Rumored Free Character Distribution In Honkai: Star Rail 2.3 Is Somewhat Bad

Options Are Very Limited

While any free character giveaway in the game should be highly appreciated, this specific leaked event does seem bad, especially when put side by side with previous events. The aforementioned Version 2.1 4-star character giveaway, for instance, gave players a roster of eight different characters to choose from, significantly increasing the variety of what was on the table.

At the time, players had two different options for all four roles. When it came to healers in Honkai: Star Rail 2.1, for instance, players could choose between Gallagher and Lynx, while those seeking a debuffer could pick either Luka or Guinaifen. This time around, the rumored options are much more limited.

If players need a healer, they can only allegedly pick Gallagher instead of being able to choose what type of gameplay kit is more adequate for their needs. As was previously mentioned, however, free giveaways should always be appreciated, even if they are not as giving as in past iterations.

HoYoverse has been generous with Honkai: Star Rail, often offering free pulls from banners and even going so far as to give a free 5-star character earlier in 2024, Dr. Ratio. As such, it is easy to get somewhat spoiled. Out of the four characters mentioned in the leak, there is no one that is truly better than the other.

Nevertheless, the prospect of free characters in Honkai: Star Rail 2.3 sounds great, even if the options turn out to be a lot more limited than before.
