One Easily Overlooked V Rising 1.0 Release Update Is A Massive Improvement For Combat

Summary The Altar of Recollection in V Rising allows players to respec their characters for free, a crucial feature in the game's new skill system.

Building the Altar is easy with 180 stone and 10 Blood Essence, and unlocks the ability to reset spell points and choose new spells.

The Altar replaces the Blood Altar, streamlining gameplay by removing the need for a dedicated item to track V Blood Carriers.

The best new features in V Rising are also the easiest to overlook. After a two-year early access period, V Rising was finally released in its launch version on May 8, 2024. That came along with a huge launch update, which added tons of new content, features, and items to V Rising. New content is exciting, but the new features arguably have the biggest impact on the gameplay. These elevate V Rising from just another vampire game to one of the best survival games on the market.

And sometimes, the smallest new features make the biggest impact. There are many changes to explore in the launch version of V Rising, but there's one in particular that players should be on the lookout for. It also intersects with some other new mechanics to make V Rising far more approachable.

How To Build & Use The Altar Of Recollection In V Rising

The most important feature in the launch update is V Rising's new Altar of Recollection, which allows players to respec their characters at will and absolutely free. Respeccing wasn't an option in the early access version of V Rising. Players were pretty much limited to whatever skills, spells, and vampire powers they ended up with. There wasn't much need for respeccing in the early access version, though. Players simply collected as many abilities as they could, and equipped them as needed.

However, the way progression has changed in V Rising's launch update necessitates a respec system. There are three avenues of progression in V Rising: skills, spells, and vampire powers. Skills come from whatever weapon the player character has equipped, while vampire powers are obtained by slaying certain bosses (V Blood Carriers like V Rising's Alpha Wolf). In the early access version, spells came from V Blood Carriers, too, but as of the launch update, spells are obtained by spending spell points the player character receives at level up.

This is a far more traditional, but less flexible, version of a skill system. Now that it's possible for players to lock themselves into a less-than-ideal build by spending their skill points on the wrong spells, respeccing is a welcome addition to V Rising. The Altar of Recollection allows the player to refund these spell points and buy spells from scratch. It doesn't impact vampire powers or weapon skills. This new feature also allows for experimentation with different playstyles, much like the early access version's spell-collecting mechanics.

Unlocking the Altar of Recollection is pretty easy, and should happen naturally as the player completes the tutorial quests. Once the tips in the top-right corner direct them to build an Altar of Recollection, the player can do just that by gathering 180 stone and 10 Blood Essence. The former can be gathered by breaking rocks, and the latter is dropped by most living enemies.

The material costs of building an Altar of Recollection (and any other crafted item) may change based on a server's difficulty settings; the values listed above are simply the default requirements.

From there, it's as simple as building the Altar of Recollection and interacting with it to reset spell points and choose new spells. Once the player activates it, they'll see a simple menu with options for all six of the magic schools in V Rising, along with a button that allows them to refund all the points they've invested in that school. They can then spend them again through the normal level-up window.

V Rising's New Altar Of Recollection Replaces The Blood Altar

A Redundant Feature Removed

Longtime players may have noticed that the Altar of Recollection looks a little familiar. That's because it reuses the same model as V Rising's Blood Altar, a construction available in the early access version. The Blood Altar had an entirely different purpose, but ultimately tied into the same aspects of the game. It was used to track V Blood Carriers by pointing towards them with a trail of red mist. This feature is no longer necessary in the launch version, because players can now track V Blood Carriers by default without having to build a dedicated item.

Still, both mechanics led to the player gaining new abilities in the end. Tracking V Blood Carriers with the Blood Altar would lead the player to a boss, which would net them a new spell or vampire ability. In much the same way, the Altar of Recollection lets the player reconfigure their spells.

This and the new telegraph circles for area-of-effect attacks make the mechanics of V Rising much easier to understand. The developers have clearly incorporated a lot of player feedback during the early access period, and the game is more approachable for it. Simple changes like these may not look like much on the surface, but they help make V Rising the best game it can be.
