Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver Pitch Meeting

Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver!

Summary With its low critical reception and lackluster character development, Rebel Moon faces an uphill battle to redeem itself in future movies.

The excessive slow-motion farming sequences and derivative storytelling have left viewers and critics disappointed in the sci-fi franchise.

Despite its poor reviews, there is still hope that Zack Snyder can turn things around by learning from past mistakes and staying true to his vision.

Following its disastrous critical reception, Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver has become the target of the latest episode of Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series. The second installment in Zack Snyder's Netflix sci-fi franchise continued the story of Sofia Boutella's Kora and the farmers-turned-rebel-fighters as they find themselves in an epic final stand against the Motherworld on Veldt. Holding a 16% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie marks the lowest-reviewed title from Snyder on the review aggregate.

Nearly a month after it hit Netflix, the latest episode of Screen Rant's own Pitch Meeting series has set its sights on Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver. The video, as seen at the top of this article, pokes fun at the movie's excessive slow-motion farming sequences making up a significant portion of its 122-minute runtime and its lack of organic character development, instead relegating backstories to brief expository conversations and rushed flashbacks rather than a more meaningful exploration. The episode also mocks the movie's obligatory sequel bait ending, from which Snyder looks to build upward of four more movies.

The Rebel Moon Franchise Has A Steep Hill To Climb

Close

With both movies garnering some of Snyder's lowest critical reviews of his 20-year career, the future of the Rebel Moon franchise is facing some hefty challenges for the creative team. The decision to film the first two movies back-to-back was initially met with some anticipation from fans of the director and curiosity from wider audiences, believing that this would lead to some extensive worldbuilding and focus on its ensemble roster of characters. Instead, the characters largely fell by the wayside in favor of a story too derivative of Star Wars and Seven Samurai and minimal actual growth for its characters.

Even with these early struggles, though, there is still a chance that Snyder and his team could turn things around going into future Rebel Moon movies. As he proved with Zack Snyder's Justice League, which garnered the best reviews of his DC Extended Universe tenure, he is capable of using a mammoth runtime to positive effect in learning from past mistakes while staying true to his vision. Additionally, his work on Army of the Dead shows that there can be originality bubbling under a seemingly familiar concept.

With Netflix having not officially greenlit future sequels, though, it remains to be seen if Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver's poor critical performance has ultimately doomed his franchise plans. The movie was still generally a viewership success for the streaming platform, falling well shy of its predecessor's 54.1-million-hour debut, though still holding the No. 1 spot for the first two weeks. Given Snyder's relationship with Netflix looks to still be on good ground as his Army of the Dead franchise plans continue to push forward in development, there is definitely ample opportunity for the filmmaker to redeem the sci-fi title in critics' eyes.

Both Rebel Moon movies are available to stream on Netflix.
