"You Have No Choice": One Early Demon Slayer Quote Perfectly Sums Up the Series' Main Theme

Summary Tanjiro from Demon Slayer teaches a powerful lesson: Keep moving forward despite darkness and loss.

Themes of grief and perseverance are prevalent in Demon Slayer, illustrated through Tanjiro's determination.

Tanjiro's words to Kazumi reflect the show's message of not giving in to despair, but finding purpose in life.

Demon Slayer is a dark series, to be sure, but its characters must keep moving on in spite of the darkness that they face. Nothing sums up this lesson that the series teaches greater than a line from Tanjiro in episode 7, intended to help a victim of demons carry on with his life after losing everything.

In episodes 6 and 7 of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro is deployed to a small town where women have been disappearing. There, he meets a man named Kazumi, whose fiancée was the latest woman to have disappeared suddenly. Tanjiro is confident this is the work of a demon, and begins investigating to locate the culprit. Tanjiro finds the Swamp Demon responsible that night, and is (with the help of Nezuko) able to save another girl, but finds out it's too late to save Kazumi's love.

Kazumi is understandably devastated, having to live on without his beloved and knowing what a horrible fate befell her. That's when Tanjiro, no stranger to grief, chimes in.

Tanjiro's Words Speak to Demon Slayer's Themes of Grief and Moving On

Tanjiro says to Kazumi, "You have to go on. No matter what. In spite of losing people... even though it's devastating." Tanjiro is speaking from experience; not too long ago, he lost his entire family to demons, with the only survivor, Nezuko, becoming a demon herself. Tanjiro could easily have given into despair, and likely would've died not long after to exposure to the elements now that his home was destroyed. But Tanjiro instead found a new goal to live for: restoring Nezuko to her previous state as a human.

Of course, this is far from the only tragedy to occur in the series, and this theme of perseverance in the face of tragedy is a consistent one throughout Demon Slayer. Almost every time that demons are involved, there's a tragedy that's just occurred to someone. But to give in in the face of the demon's power is to surrender, to let the evil of the world win. It's Tanjiro's job as a Demon Slayer not to let that happen, and that job helps to give his life meaning in the face of all the senseless loss. Tanjiro may struggle and endure many hardships, but he does so to save others from the despair he has faced.

Tanjiro would go on to face loss again and again, notably with Kyojuro Rengoku in the Mugen Train arc, but he never even comes close to giving in. In some ways, it's an embodiment of the sheer determination that a shonen character is typically overflowing with, but Tanjiro makes it clear that this isn't just what's needed to be heroic; it's needed to survive at all. Standing up and continuing to live really is the only possible reaction to loss, or else you'll find yourself gone along with them, and that only perpetuates the cycle of loss. Taking Tanjiro's words to heart is the only real option, and it represents Demon Slayer's themes of loss and grief incredibly well.
