Player Discovers A Time-Saving BG3 Trick After 700 Hours Of Gameplay
Summary Baldur's Gate 3 players are still discovering things about the game after hundreds of hours.
One such hidden feature is breaking traps instead of disarming them to save time and resources.
Items can be thrown at traps to destroy them instead of setting them off or potentially failing a disarming check. A number of spells are also useful for avoiding damage from traps.
When Baldur’s Gate 3 players aren't romancing Astarion and swooning over his snarky lines, they’re often using the rogue to pick locks and disarm traps, though there are some alternatives to the latter that players are just now finding out about. Though his nimble fingers come in handy, sometimes there’s just not enough room in the party for him, and traveling back and forth between the camp just for his lockpicking skills is annoying (and not always available).
Reddit user Specific-Remote9295 shared an easy trick players can use to prevent traps from going off without disarming them. In the video shared in their post, Karlach picks up a barrel and throws it onto a trap, breaking it instead of disarming it. Though some would believe that breaking the trap can only result in it going off, it seems this trick works wonderfully and doesn't create any in-party carnage to deal with.
The user said it took their friend 700 hours of gameplay before realizing not every trap needed to be disarmed. Not only is this method great for rogue-less parties, but it’s also much more time-efficient than disarming every individual trap (and accidentally causing an explosion when inevitably rolling a critical failure).

Certain Spells Will Stop A Trap From Detonating

Though Trap Disarm Toolkits seem to be everywhere at the start of the game, by the time a player reaches Baldur’s Gate, it’s possible to encounter traps without one of these kits on-hand – especially for those not including Astarion as a regular party member. But there are plenty of workarounds to traps that don’t require a companion with a sleight of hand proficiency.
In addition to the above method, players in the comments of Specific-Remote9295’s post noted that most traps can be triggered with th cantrip minor illusion. Casting the spell on top of one of the traps will trigger it, while placing it over a vent meant to leak a gas or other noxious fumes will block the vent from doing so. The spell dancing lights also seems to block vents.
For those who don’t want to speculate as to how a spell like dancing lights or minor illusion holds enough physical weight to trigger and block traps, there’s also the option to place barrels, crates, or other items on top of the traps to prevent them from being triggered. This is another way players have been breezing through dangerous areas, and it doesn’t require more resources than what’s in the room already.
Sometimes, though, the issue isn’t disarming the traps, it’s finding them. Players without characters that are high in Perception can also use one of Baldur's Gate 3's best cantrips, light, to reveal traps in a room. Locating traps, at the very least, will prevent a player’s party from accidentally blowing up because one member triggered it before it could be spotted. Really, Larian Studios thought of every possible loophole players could possibly want to exploit when playing Baldur’s Gate 3, leaving some wild workarounds players are still uncovering.
