Warning: contains spoilers for Shazam #11!
Mary Marvel is integral to the lore of Shazam, but a recent evolution on her part threatens to upend it all. The Shazam Family is one of the first such groups to appear in comics, and Mary Marvel has long been one of its pillars. Now, in Shazam #11, Mary’s recent birthday has led to a massive change in her status quo, and could have implications for the Shazam Family.
Shazam #11 is written by Jose Campbell and drawn by Emanuela Lupacchino. Billy Batson’s foster family, including Mary, are preparing for a visit from Child Protective Services (CPS), and they are getting the house in order. The CPS representative arrives, and tells the foster parents they must wait outside as the children are interviewed. Mary walks out to greet the agent, who then tells Mary she too must wait outside. Mary had just turned 18, and in the words of the agent, she was “no longer my concern.”
A stunned Mary just looked on.

The runaway success of Shazam/Captain Marvel in the 1940s inspired his then-publisher Fawcett to create a whole family of characters based on him. Within a few years, both Captain Marvel Junior and Mary Marvel made their debuts. While the exact nature of Mary’s origin has changed over time, she is usually depicted as Billy’s sister, who received her powers from the Wizard as well. Mary is the cool and intelligent member of the Shazam Family, and was even the primary champion of the Wizard at one point.
Mary Marvel first appeared in 1942's Captain Marvel Adventures #18.
Now, however, changes are on the horizon for the Shazam Family. As the CPS representative points out, Mary is now, technically, an adult. This sets her apart from the rest of the Shazam Family, who are still underage. In some cases, such as Darla, they are still quite young. While Mary is not much older than Billy or Freddy, she is now “grown-up” in the eyes of the law, and this sets her apart from her foster siblings. Whether this leads to feelings of isolation in Mary remains to be seen, but her reaction in Shazam #11 is telling.
An Adult Shazam Family Could Be An Awesome Thing for the DC Universe
The Adult Shazam Family Could be Great Heroes
This could have larger ramifications for the rest of the Shazam Family as well. As Billy, Freddy, Pedro, Darla and Eugene continue to age, and become adults themselves, their perspectives on life will no doubt change and grow. This will impact their heroic careers, possibly for the better. The knowledge and life experiences they will gain in the years ahead could deepen their sense of compassion and empathy. When this is paired with their powers, it makes for a great hero. Mary Marvel’s entrance into adulthood does not necessarily need to spell doom for the Shazam Family.
