Siren Season 4 Never Happened - Here's Why

Siren Season 4 Never Happened - Here's Why

Summary Siren season 4 was set to explore Ryn's leadership of the mermaids and her missing love interest.

Despite being Freeform's top series, Siren's declining ratings led to its cancellation after season 3.

Ryn's story in Siren season 4 would have included the merfolk, human conflict, and a possible reveal to the world.

Siren season 4 would have been the next step in the fantasy drama series, but it never ended up materializing after season 3 ended on May 28, 2020. One of the often-forgotten Freeform TV shows is the three-season drama, Siren, which follows a young siren, the creature of Greek myth, who arrives at a small coastal town of Bristol Cove, Washington in search of her older sister who was abducted. It's a mermaid-centric TV show, and the conflict between the creatures and the humans is the main theme of the series.

Complicating the matter is the young siren, Ryn (Eline Powell), who falls in love with a human named Ben (Alex Roe). Premiering on Freeform, the rebranded name of ABC Family, on March 29, 2018, Siren escalated the conflict between the humans and the mermaids until season 3, when the villainous Tia (Tiffany Lonsdale) leads a massive attack on the humans. When she's defeated, Ryn becomes the new leader of the mermaids, a thread that would have been explored in season 4, but the show ended on a cliffhanger.

Siren Season 3's Ratings Were Declining (Despite It Being Freeform's Most-Watched Series)

Not Enough New Viewers Were Coming To Siren

Close

For seasons 1 and 2, Siren was Freeform's most-watched series, via Deadline, yet the channel opted to cancel the show after season 3 in August 2020, which seems like an odd decision. But despite being the platform's top-watched program, Siren saw a double-digit ratings drop in season 3. However, those metrics used linear ratings, meaning it only accounted for viewers who watched the show on Freeform as it aired. So, network execs saw the trendline and decided to end things early.

Siren was not the only Freeform series to be canceled unceremoniously that year. The Party of Five reboot was canceled in April 2020 after one season and Cloak and Dagger ended only a few months earlier in October 2019 after two seasons. Siren's cancelation may have also been a result of Freeform prioritizing new shows, as Love in the Time of Corona and Cruel Summer premiered in 2020 and 2021, respectively, though both shows have since been canceled too.

What Siren Season 4 Could Have Been About

Ryn Is Now The Leader Of The Mermaids And In Search Of Ben

Only one cast or crew member has spoken up about Siren season 4. Eline Powell posted an Instagram tribute to her time on the show, thanking everyone involved with the production of the series and expressing gratitude to her fans. Beyond that, no one has said much about Siren season 4. But the end of season 3 sets up some easy story threads to pick up. Ryn becomes the leader of the mermaids in season 3, episode 10, "The Toll of the Sea", after slaying Tia. The final shot is of her waiting for Ben to return home.

Season 4 could see Ryn ruling the merfolk and awaiting her love, who vanishes at the end of season 3. Xander (Ian Verdun) is now sheriff of Bristol Cove, and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Robb (Deniz Akdeniz) set out to clean up the ocean and assuage bad feelings between humans and merpeople. Furthermore, the wider world still doesn't believe in the creatures, meaning Siren still has the big card to play of revealing the mermaids to everyone. Alas, there are no plans for Siren season 4, and it's unlikely Freeform will ever return to Bristol Cove.
