Summary Liam Hemsworth faces criticism as Geralt in The Witcher Season 4, despite efforts to do justice to the role.
Freya Allan defends Hemsworth, appealing to the fanbase to give him a chance amid backlash.
The Witcher series struggles with maintaining audience interest, posing challenges for Hemsworth's future in the show.
The Witcher is preparing for its fourth season, which will be an important one as it will be Liam Hemsworth’s debut as Geralt of Rivia, and Ciri actor Freya Allan just nailed the impossible challenge that Hemsworth is facing after Henry Cavill’s departure. Netflix’s The Witcher quickly became one of the streaming giant’s most popular TV shows, but it also didn’t take long for it to become divisive. The Witcher took too many creative liberties, mostly during season 2, which deeply hurt the audience’s reception and subsequent seasons, and made way for a lot of criticism.
The Witcher season 3 fixed some of those mistakes and was a lot more loyal to the source material, but it also arrived with a huge change for the series. Before season 3 was released, Henry Cavill was announced to be leaving The Witcher, and Liam Hemsworth as his Geralt of Rivia replacement. The announcement was received with a lot of criticism on social media, as fans of the TV show and books lamented Cavill’s departure and showed their disapproval of Hemsworth’s casting. The Witcher season 4 has some big challenges to overcome, and Freya Allan has nailed one of them.

Freya Allan said The Witcher fanbase can be “very attack-y” and that she hopes viewers will give Hemsworth a chance.
Henry Cavill’s performance as Geralt of Rivia was very well-received by fans of The Witcher books, who praised his accuracy, so with that in mind, it’s understandable that his departure was surprising and sad – however, that doesn’t justify all the hate Liam Hemsworth has gotten before he has even been seen in full Geralt of Rivia costume. Hemsworth’s co-star, Freya Allan, is well aware of this and has now spoken about the challenges Hemsworth is facing, especially with fans. Speaking to Collider, Allan said she feels sorry for Hemsworth, and he has been working hard to prepare for the role, as he wants to “try and bring the heart”.
Allan added that the Witcher fanbase can be “very attack-y” and that she hopes viewers will give Hemsworth a chance. Hemsworth certainly has many challenges ahead in his first season as Geralt of Rivia, as it’s not just the audience and their reaction, but also all the physical and acting challenges that a character like Geralt brings. Hemsworth also has to find a way to not try to replicate Cavill’s performance and make it his own while staying true to the character, and he definitely deserves a chance to show what he can do.

The Witcher wasn’t able to maintain the success of its first season, and even after the improvements made in season 3, the show is still in decline and the audience has lost interest in it.
Unfortunately, even though Liam Hemsworth deserves a chance to show what he can do with Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, it’s already too late for him. The Witcher wasn’t able to maintain the success of its first season, and even after the improvements made in season 3, the show is still in decline and the audience has lost interest in it. The main problem with The Witcher is how far it has diverged from the books, and with that also comes problems with character development and world-building. With this in mind, it’s unlikely The Witcher’s audience will give Hemsworth the chance he deserves.
Of course, it can happen that The Witcher season 4 will spark enough curiosity in its audience to tune in to watch Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, but once again, the challenge is to maintain that attention through the whole season. To make it more complicated, Liam Hemsworth is expected to continue playing Geralt in The Witcher season 5, which brings even bigger challenges to the show’s final season.
