Venom's character arc takes a dark turn, posing a challenge that even Thanos and Galactus failed to achieve.
The Free Comic Book Day issue showcases a chilling vision of Venom's future, highlighting the potential destruction of all existence.
Warning: contains spoilers for Free Comic Book Day: Ultimate Universe/Spider-Man #1!Venom has a new codename in the Marvel Universe, one that makes him deadlier than both Thanos and Galactus. In the Free Comic Book Day: Ultimate Universe/Spider-Man special, a bonus story involving Venom brings the symbiote’s future into focus. In this dark vision of what is to come, Venom has become an all-powerful force, one with enough power to snuff out all creation.
The Free Comic Book Day: Ultimate Universe/Spider-Man special featured a new Venom story, written by Al Ewing and drawn by Iban Coello. Venom’s son, Dylan, is shocked to see a vision of his father, fully consumed by the symbiote.
This horrifying new entity, calling itself “the Anti-All,” threatens all existence, saying that if his plans come to fruition, the Ninth Cosmos (a future iteration of the Marvel Universe) will cease to exist–which will bring an end to all life in the multiverse for good.
Venom's Recent Character Arc Has Redefined His Role in the Marvel Universe
Venom's New Role Upends Everything He is Currently Working For
Ewing and Coello’s story continues Venom’s character arc that began in Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s tenure on the character. Venom learned of the existence of Knull, AKA “the King in Black.” The god of the symbiotes, Knull harbored deep hatred in his heart for the universe, and embarked on a campaign of deicide, slaughtering cosmic entities indiscriminately. Venom, along with Earth’s heroes, defeat Knull. In the aftermath, Venom ascends to the role of King in Black, and begins steering the symbiotes in a more benevolent direction. Yet as seen in this issue, it was all seemingly for naught.
Venom’s new role as the “Anti-All” takes the concept of the King in Black to its horrifying extreme. Knull sought to eradicate all life in the universe, and return it to a state of darkness. If the Anti-All is successful, then the next incarnation of existence will be the last, replaced by an all-consuming void. The Anti-All will have fulfilled the mandate of the King in Black. Recent issues of Ewing’s Venom have established that the Kings in Black can trace their roots back to previous iterations of the cosmos, and Venom may be the one to end it all.
Venom's New Form Poses a Serious Threat to the Marvel Universe
Venom Will Do What Many Other Villians Have Failed To Do
If Venom, or the Anti-All, is successful in destroying the cycle of creation permanently, then he will have accomplished something that has eluded both Galactus and Thanos. The two, particularly the Mad Titan, have sought the same goal: to destroy everything. Thanos’ dark impulses stem from his desire to impress Death, but the Anti-All simply does it because it can. Furthermore, Thanos was never able to spread his evil across the multiverse. If Venom is able to implement his plan, then he will end not only our universe, but every other one as well.
