What Are Anya's Horns in Spy x Family?
Summary Anya's horns are a purely aesthetic detail without a special meaning beyond visuals.
Endo carefully planned this decorative feature from the beginning of Spy x Family.
Anya was inspired by a character from Endo's earlier one-shot manga, Rengoku no Ashe.
Spy x Family is filled with numerous mysteries and surprising moments, but no conundrum is more confusing and puzzling to fans than the origins of Anya's signature horns. Through the anime and manga, the young girl is constantly pictured with two black and yellow horns stuck on either side of her bright pink hair. Where did these horns come from, and what is their purpose?
Anya is no ordinary young girl; she possesses remarkably astounding powers beyond what an average child is capable of. She is able to read minds, but she keeps this secret carefully hidden from everyone around her, even her adoptive parents, Loid and Yor Forger.
Some fans have speculated that Anya's horns are related to this telepathy ability, and some even posited that she would be unable to use her mind-reading skills without them. However, based on previous writing choices from the series' creator himself, Tatsuya Endo, this surprisingly does not seem to be the case after all.

Anya's Horns Have No Special Meaning Beyond Being A Purely Aesthetic Detail
Contrary to popular belief, these facets of her appearance do not control her telepathy powers

Although some may believe that every detail of a character indicates a deeper meaning, many creators have revealed that some artistic choices exist solely because they enjoy how they look. For example, during Jump Festa 2022, Spy x Family creator, Tatsuya Endo, spoke about his process when creating another Spy x Family character, Yor, who is Anya's adoptive mother. He described how he chose her iconic golden hairpiece that would become an important aspect of her assassin look. The detail was picked out intentionally, as Endo did reference Yor's status as "Thorn Princess", in the interview, describing how "spiky things seem to suit her".
However, beyond being a stylistic choice, Yor's golden and flowered hairband does not relate to her powers at all. In a similar vein, the manga and anime seem to suggest that this detail of Anya's adorable and memorable look also exists just to add visual intrigue, similar to Yor's hairband. Anya has been pictured in the series occasionally without her horns, suggesting that these features of her outfit are removable and just there for fun. Furthermore, in the official Spy x Family Fanbook, Endo revealed that even in the early stages, he wanted Anya "to have a decoration attached to her head."
Endo Explains How He Always Intended On Giving Anya "A Decoration Attached To Her Head"
Since the beginning of Spy x Family's creation, this style choice was carefully pre-planned
Anya was always going to have some form of "decoration" attached to her hair, but it is truly intriguing that Endo selected a pair of horns. They match with the rest of her black attire and stand out atop her bright pink hair, so the choice certainly seems to fit. Perhaps the horns even hint at Anya's telepathy, since they seem to reference that feature of her personality, but they do not seem to control her power or be permanent, based on the fact that she can remove them. Interestingly, Anya was actually inspired by a character in another work by Endo himself.
An earlier shot created by Tatsuya Endo, entitled Rengoku no Ashe and published in Jump Square, depicted a character that appears shockingly similar to Anya Forger. In "The Making of a Jump Manga: Interview with Editor Shihei Lin", Lin confirmed the connection between the two characters, stating that Anya's design was inspired by the main character of that previous manga. Apart from this self-made blueprint Endo utilized to help him create Anya's look, the creator does not seem to have other inspirations regarding her horns. This doesn't mean they are meaningless, though, they represent Anya's demeanor and who she is flawlessly.

Anya Was Inspired By Ashe From Rengoku no Ashe
This one shot manga was actually written by Spy x Family creator, Tatsuya Endo, himself
Anya's horns represent her goofy, mischievous nature. She often gets into schemes that stress her adoptive parents, but at her core, she is a lovable and caring child who is gifted, intelligent, and devoted to helping others in need. Anya is a remarkable character and makes the series truly stand out. Her iconic and vibrant design is unforgettable and recognizable absolutely anywhere, becoming a pop culture icon quickly after the anime's release. Tatsuya Endo has considered every aspect of Anya's look very carefully and, drawing on previous inspirations, he has produced one of Spy x Family's best and most extraordinarily memorable character designs.
