Maestro's warning in Doctor Who season 14, episode 2 should worry the Doctor and Ruby Sunday. Though the two-episode premiere came on May 11, Disney+ is considering the Christmas special "The Curse of Ruby Rose" as the first episode of the season. That means that the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) are already well on their way to understanding each other as traveling companions. Unfortunately, the godlike Maestro indicated to the Doctor that Ruby is far from what she seems, emphasizing that "this creature is very wrong".

While every version of the Doctor encounters mysteries during their journey, Ruby's mystery is enough to terrify even the Toymaker's child. In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Russell T Davies explained that viewers should be "very" worried about the threat that Ruby poses.

In the video, Davies emphasizes that "Something happened on that Christmas Eve in 2004. Something extraordinary’s going on." He promises that the "titanic" mystery will be explained on-screen in a climax featuring "some of Millie’s greatest acting, and Ncuti’s, as well. It’s really wonderful stuff." He also describes a mystery woman played by Susan Twist who "seems to be playing a different person every time" and promises a surprising climax for that plot as well.
