Justice League's Most Underrated Hero Gets Ground-Up Redesign in Applause-Worthy Cosplay
Summary Bluebeetlesbug's Atom cosplay transforms the character, giving a fresh perspective on the DC hero.
The cosplay redeems Jean Loring, providing a better ending for the character than comics did.
This cosplay highlights the importance of treating Silver Age icons like the Atom with respect and care.
The Atom is a vastly underrated member of the Justice League, and they get a “from the ground up” reinvention in some truly creative cosplay. The Atom, even though he was not a founding member, is still a League pillar. Just as critical to the Atom’s lore is his lover Jean Loring, and cosplayer bluebeetlesbug refashions Loring as the Atom in a cosplay that must be seen to be believed.
Bluebeetlesbug unveiled the amazing cosplay in a post on X, formerly Twitter. She gives credit to atxmpalmers and dinahspolly for the concept–and she brought it to life. The outfit keeps the blue and red color scheme of the Atom’s classic duds. However, instead of a standard superhero costume, bluebeetlesbug converts it into a skirt and leggings combo. The new Atom completes her costume with a blue beret, giving the outfit a high-fashion vibe.
Bluebeetlesbug’s cosplay gives a bold new vision of the Atom, one that not only honors Ray Palmer, but redeems Jean Loring.
The Atom (and Jean Loring) Deserved Better
This New Cosplay Redeems Jean Loring
The Atom was one of the many Golden Age heroes that were given high-concept science fiction makeovers. Whereas the original Atom was simply a short and stock brawler, this new incarnation was a scientist who fashioned shrinking technology out of material from a dwarf star. Like other DC Silver Age heroes, the Atom had a lover: Jean Loring. She was the love of his life, but their relationship ended in tragedy, as Loring was revealed to be the murderer of Sue Dibny and Jack Drake, as seen in Identity Crisis. Loring would go on to become a host for Eclipso.
Bluebeetlesbug’s cosplay redeems Jean Loring. Loring’s actions in Identity Crisis were wildly out of character. Not even the character’s mental illness provides justification for the killing of Dibny and Drake. Loring thought, in her distorted logic, that the murders would force other heroes to appreciate their loved ones more. Loring was shipped off to Arkham, where she became a vessel for Eclipso, as seen in Countdown to Infinite Crisis. Jean Loring was last seen in Justice Society of America, still incarcerated. Jean Loring deserved better, and this cosplay gave her the happy ending she deserved.
This Cosplay Proves DC Needs to Bring the Atom (and Jean Loring) Back
The Atom is a Silver Age Icon, and Should Be Treated With Respect
Bluebeetlesbug’s cosplay is also a wonderful tribute to the Atom, and the character’s legacy in the DC Universe. The Atom was once a great hero, a foundation of comics’ Silver Age. Like Barry Allen and Hal Jordan, Ray Palmer has had his ups and downs, and came through on the other side a better person. However, DC has failed to capitalize on this, giving the Atom the same treatment those icons received. Bluebeetlebug’s cosplay, on the other hand, pays the perfect loving tribute to this Justice League icon.
