Summary After four years of attempted redemption, Norman Osborn returns to villainy as Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man #50, donning his iconic villain and setting his sights on Peter Parker once more.

In the preview pages for the issue, Peter Parker is shocked by Osborn's transformation back into Green Goblin, setting up a dramatic showdown between two characters who were allies up until very recently.

The return of the Green Goblin to Marvel Comics feels monumental, as the next chapter of Norman Osborn's long history of villainy is set to be written.

It has been nearly four years since Marvel Comics readers were last privy to the antics of one of Spider-Man's most dangerous villains – but now, as the latest volume of Amazing Spider-Man reaches a milestone issue, Norman Osborn appears set to suit up and glide into action as the Green Goblin once more.

A preview released by Looper for Amazing Spider-Man (2024) #50 – written by Zeb Wells, with art by Ed McGuinness – makes it clear that Norman Osborn's tenure as an ally of the Webslinger has come to an end, as he succumbs to his worst impulses and becomes the Goblin once more.

The last time Green Goblin was seen was in 2020, during a storyline in which was "cleansed" of his sins. As a result, he went from being the Green Goblin to the heroic Gold Goblin – though sadly, this redemption arc has seemingly ended in regression.

As featured in the preview pages for Amazing Spider-Man #50, the juxtaposition of [Norman's] Gold Goblin and Green Goblin costumes reflects his struggle to be a better person, one that ultimately proves futile.

Despite trying to become a hero in recent years, Norman Osborn has donned the Green Goblin outfit once again. He never got rid of his Green Goblin gear, and he's putting it back on one more time. As featured in the preview pages for Amazing Spider-Man #50, the juxtaposition of his Gold Goblin and Green Goblin costumes reflects his struggle to be a better person, one that ultimately proves futile. Sadly, no one is more stunned at this transformation than Peter Parker; Spider-Man watched Norman work to save others, and now he's going to have to fight his former ally.

The preview for Amazing Spider-Man #50 also features Norman Osborn's iconic glider coming back into the comics. While caught off guard by the return, Peter Parker may not be at a total disadvantage. In the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #53 – by Zeb Wells, Ed McGuinness and Todd Nauck – Spider-Man is slated to transform into Spider-Goblin. The Webslinger's costume includes a spider-themed glider, not unlike that of the one belonging to Norman Osborn. While it's unclear if Spider-Goblin is a hero or villain, a showdown between him and Green Goblin is all but certain.

The return of the Green Goblin to Marvel Comics feels monumental, at the same time that it has a sense of inevitability.

The return of the Green Goblin to Marvel Comics feels monumental, at the same time that it has a sense of inevitability. Among the most tantalizing details from the preview for Amazing Spider-Man #50 is the fact that Norman Osborn never got rid of the Green Goblin, which appears to give an insight into his disposition towards his own heroic turn. While it's possible he kept it to remind himself what he used to be, it's equally likely that part of him knew he might one day become Spider-Man's enemy once more.
