Pokémon Fan Recreates Pokémon Yellow In An "Overwhelmingly Positive" Rated Steam Gem

Summary A Terraria fan recreated Pokémon Yellow in-game.

The recreation includes lots of paint, no mods, and the Volt Bunny as Pikachu.

Terraria has limited Easter eggs or opportunities for recreation in the game.

Sandbox games have consistently been a host for crossover recreations, and the ever-popular Pokémon Yellow is the subject of a particularly impressive one. Games like Minecraft and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have given creative players the tools and freedom to remake scenes or settings from shows and other video games, but rarely are the same extensive efforts seen in Terraria.

Reddit user EaldorPrime shared their recreation of the Game Boy classic Pokémon Yellow, done entirely in Terraria. According to the user’s post, this was done without using mods, making it all the more impressive when considering Terraria's side-scrolling viewpoint, compared to the isometric camera in Pokémon. According to EaldorPrime in the comments on the post, they managed the recreation through “a lot of paint” and “lots and lots of 1x1 spaced echo platforms.”

And for the game’s beloved Pikachu? EaldorPrime used the Volt Bunny, which was added as part of the game in the 1.4 update. The companion is a direct reference to the Electric-type Pokémon, as not only is its coloring nearly identical to the franchise’s best-known mascot, but its movement seems to imitate Pikachu’s erratic quick attack movement as seen in the Pokémon anime and other games like Super Smash Bros.

Terraria Has Plenty Of Crossovers In Other Games

But Few Games Get Easter Eggs In Terraria

Terraria is a spectacular indie game that has consistently been rated well by its players, currently boasting an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with more than one million reviews (and nearly 45 million copies sold as of 2022). But despite technically being a sandbox title, it’s not one that lends itself to masterful recreations as well as some other titles do.

There are a handful of Easter eggs for other beloved games scattered throughout Terraria (besides the Volt Bunny’s nod to Pikachu). Creepers from Minecraft can appear in a player’s Terraria world, though they’re not nearly as dangerous as they are in the 3D counterpart. Stardew Valley fans can catch a Joja Cola while fishing and receive the Well Fed buff for consuming it, or have it purified by the Dryad. Letting the Dryad purify the soda can will open a portal to Stardew Valley, granting the Terraria player a Stardrop and a Junimo companion.

ConcernedApe recently put a similar Easter egg for Terraria fans into Stardew Valley as part of the 1.6 update. Players can throw an Ancient Doll into the pool of lava at Level 100 of the mines to receive a Faraway Stone from the Bone Serpent. Taking this stone to the basement of the Wizard’s tower and placing it on the alter of branches will open a portal to Terraria, where a cat will then gift the player the Meowmere Sword.

There are a couple of other nods to big franchises scattered in Terraria, like a callback to the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who and a robot hat reminiscent of the main character of Cave Story. Though Terraria may not lend itself to recreations like some other games, its consistent praise 13 years after its release stands as a testament to the plethora of original content available to players, and the impressive recreation of Pokémon Yellow shows its dedicated playerbase is still strong.
