Warning: Spoilers for Detective Comics #1084
Summary Batman declares "I will become consequence" in a new memorable line that critiques the lack of consequences in superhero comics.
Batman's new commitment hints at ending the cycle of endless deaths and returns in the superhero genre.
Batman's influence over the DC Universe is unrivaled, making him a force for change and consequence.
Arguably the single most iconic hero in comics, DC's flagship vigilante, Batman, is also one of the industry's most successful properties. The hero's fame has been built up through a combination of great villains, street-level adventures and memorable quotes that keep him in mind as a pop culture icon, and now he has a brand-new one-liner to add to his collection.
Bruce Wayne is one of comics' most quotable characters, with his best-known line being his statement: "I am vengeance, I am the night, I am Batman." However, the hero has a slew of competing quotes that are arguably even better — including one from a recent issue of Detective Comics.

In Detective Comics #1084 by Ram V. and Javier Fernández, Batman is shown picking up the pieces after his possession by an Azmer demon and the Orghams' hypnosis of Gotham. With the city only just beginning to remember him, Bruce heads out into the desert to visit Talia al Ghul. While there, he learns of her plan to continue using the Lazarus Pit to resurrect people. Batman Declares "I Will Become Consequence" in a Badass New Line
Batman Has a Plethora of Great Quotes
Batman has often represented a firm, uncompromising force within the DC Universe, and that has been reflected through his best stories. Famously motivated by the death of his parents to save the innocent people of Gotham from crime, the hero is tasked with taking on a cavalcade of eccentric villains. With his latest saga having nearly killed him, the character has never been more conscious of the lack of consequences in the DCU. This self-aware, meta critique of the superhero genre itself speaks to the Caped Crusader's place in the universe.
In an age of endless death and return, nothing makes a character as significant as representing an end to this cycle.
Batman has a wide variety of quotes that represent his nature as an almost unstoppable force for justice in the DCU. Phrases like "I am the night" show how the hero is more than just a man, but a manifestation of vengeance and fear against Gotham's criminals. His new commitment to bringing about a permanence of change eclipses these lines. After all, in an age of endless death and return, nothing makes a character as significant as representing an end to this cycle. With so many villains still getting away with murder, the city is in desperate need of real, lasting consequence.
If Anyone Represents Consequence in the DCU, It's Batman
Batman's Popularity Gives Him Massive Influence Over Other Characters
Batman has been a major force for change in DC since the Bronze Age, when he bankrolled the Justice League and formed the Outsiders. Since the Modern Age, his influence over other characters and the direction of the franchise has eclipsed even that of Superman. Very few characters have been as much a prime mover in the events of the DCU as the Caped Crusader, who has been responsible for key events, such as "Tower of Babel" and "Dark Nights Metal." Known for meddling with forces he doesn't understand and staring down cosmic gods, the hero truly represents consequence; this line only makes it official.
Readers have long lamented how, through a seemingly non-stop slew of deaths and resurrections, nothing seems to have a lasting impact in superhero universes. When DC killed the Justice League in Justice League #75 by Joshua Williamson and Daniel Sampere, fans knew "death" couldn't be the whole truth. Even in Gotham, the return of characters like Jason Todd shows nobody stays dead. Now, however, Batman's commitment to consequences could mean an end to these unlikely returns — at least in Gotham.
